An Italian island will pay half of flight tariff to woo tourists after COVID-19 lockdown

As reported earlier, Italy will witness some ease in lockdown measures from May 4, after which some of the establishments will resume work. Meanwhile, an Italian island is introducing new schemes in a bid to woo tourists. Sicily, an island in South Italy, is offering to pay half the price of tourists’ flight tickets after the Coronavirus crisis.

As per the latest reports, Sicily is encouraging tourists to visit the island. Further, it is offering to pay half the price of tourists’ plane tickets, as well as pay for one in three of their night stays at a hotel. Sicily’s regional government is trying to identify ways to boost tourism in the region, and reportedly, will also make entry to museums and archaeological sites free. Tourists will be able to avail such vouchers from the island’s tourism website. Italy has been hit more severely by the COVID-19 pandemic than any other European countries and, in all this, Sicily’s tourism industry alone suffered a loss of more than 1 billion Euros in March and April, after travel restrictions were imposed and borders were closed.

The latest measures to woo tourists by the Italian island is looked upon as a route out of lockdown, and steps to reboot the tourism sector. Referring to easing of lockdown in early May, Italy’s Prime Minister urged the citizens to follow the social distancing rules as earlier to keep the deadly virus from spreading, or else the contagion might just rise again.
As such, tourist boards are trying to find ways to safely resume business, and also ensure that social distancing remains in place.
