2000-year-old Ganpati idol on display at a Mumbai exhibition

The 10-day Ganeshutsav festival started today and is being celebrated with much enthusiasm by devotees across the country. This year, the residents of Mumbai got an amazing opportunity to take part in an exhibition of images and sculptures of Lord Ganesha at the Jehangir Art Gallery. The exhibits on display are from the personal collection of Doctor Prakash Kothari. However, the major crowd puller at the exhibition is the 2000-year-old Lord Ganesha idol, which is believed to have been carved in the first century.

Some of the sculptures that are on display here are embossed on foreign currency, coins, and stamps. Moreover, some are in the shape of spoons, matchboxes, jewellery, printed paintings and postcards. Reportedly, Dr Kothari has been collecting sculptures and images of Lord Ganesha from across the world. While speaking to the press, Kothari stated that some of the rare items from his collection are from abroad whereas he collected some from flea markets, and some popular chor bazaars.
He even stated that the oldest Ganapati idol is with him and is not in China as believed. He also claimed that the idol with him is probably the oldest on planet earth.

This exhibition is open till today, i.e., when the 10-day Ganeshotsav festival kick-starts in Mumbai. Entry to the exhibition is open to all and free of cost.
