Possibly a corruption of the Gaelic name Àrd-na-Said – which means ‘Height of Arrows’, which then became ‘Archer’s Seat’, which then became ‘Arthur’s Seat’ – or perhaps simply named after good King Arthur, this famous old crag has captured the imagination of local artists, writers and other intellectuals for centuries.
