Chas Municipal Corporation is cracking down on illegal buildings, halting construction and demanding owners present permits. Those failing to comply face demolition. Simultaneously, a regularization drive allows eligible property owners 60 days to apply online for legalizing existing structures, aiming to improve urban planning adherence.

Authorities conducted a massive anti-encroachment drive outside Howrah railway station. Bulldozers demolished makeshift shops and illegal structures. The operation aimed to improve passenger convenience and clear railway land. Security personnel were deployed to prevent untoward incidents. Some vendors alleged inadequate notice and expressed concerns about their livelihoods. The drive aimed to clear illegal occupation and improve pedestrian movement.

The cleared 5,200 sq metres area will not just help capacity augmentation and passenger amenities, but it will also streamline passenger movement. Railways plan to create designated pedestrian and public transport spaces, and organise pick-up and drop-off zones for autos, taxis and BEST buses to ensure safer entry and exit round the clock.
