In his Budget 2017-18 presentation in Parliament on February 1, 2017, finance minister Arun Jaitley said that farmers, rural employment and infrastructure development are focus areas of this year's Budget. He also said that he will spend more in rural areas while maintaining the "best standards of fiscal prudence."

More steps will be taken to benefit farmers and the weaker sections, he said. Issuance of soil health cards have gathered momentum, will setup a mini lab in Krishi Vigyan Kendras, he informed.
Rs 9,000 crore higher allocation for payment of sugarcane arrears have been allocated by the government.
Jaitley also said that a modern law on contract farming will be circulated among states to be adopted. Participation of women in MGNREGA has increased to 55 percent from less than 45 percent in the past. The govt has made a conscious effort to reorient MGNREGA to support the effort to double farmers' incomes.
The initiative to geo tag all MGNREGA assets and putting them in public domain has increased transparency. India is on the way to achieving 100 percent village electrification by 2018, said Jaitley.
The Swacch Bharat Mission has made great progress in ending open defecation. Sanitation in rural areas has increased to 60 percent. Open defecation free villages are getting priority for piped water supply.
Jaitley said that he is committed to double the farmers' income in 5 years.
