Ronyell Whitaker, a former cornerback for the Minnesota Vikings, passed away at the age of 46 on Feb. 22, 2026. The cause of death has not been announced. His family issued a statement via the Vikings and has requested privacy. They said Whitaker’s life was marked by purpose, passion, and perseverance.

According to the Whitaker family’s statement, Ronyell played high school football for Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia. He played college football for the Virginia Tech Hokies and made an everlasting impact with his talent, determination, and leadership.
He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He spent two seasons in Florida and moved to NFL Europe in 2006, joining the German team Rhein Fire, which played at the LTU Arena that year.
He also played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2007 and the Detroit Lions in 2008. He later joined the Canadian Football League [CFL], playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2009.
In 2010, he retired from professional football. He became a defensive backs coach at Chanhassen High School from 2014 to 2018. He was also the owner and CEO of Whitaker Group LLC in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area. The company specialized in relocation transactions and short sales since 2011.

He started three of 31 games played for the Vikings and Buccaneers in the NFL. He led NFL Europe in interceptions and defensive touchdowns, with 141 yards and two touchdowns in 2006.
