Patrick Mahomes is staying in Kansas City for a long, long time. The Chiefs restructured his contract this week, extending his deal through the 2033 season and making him the first player in NFL history to sign a contract valued at over half a billion dollars. The new agreement is worth $504.75 million, with incentives that could push the total past $520 million. Mahomes will average $63.1 million per year, clearing Dak Prescott's league-leading $60 million mark by a comfortable margin.
Why did the Chiefs restructure Patrick Mahomes' contract now?
Kansas City has made a habit of reworking Patrick Mahomes' deal every offseason. It keeps their salary cap manageable enough to build a competitive roster around him, and the timing of this extension made obvious sense. The quarterback market had shifted dramatically. Prescott, Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen all signed big-money deals in recent years, resetting what teams pay elite quarterbacks. Mahomes was due a significant bump, and the Chiefs delivered one.
The backdrop to all this, though, is a sobering one. Mahomes tore the ligaments in his left knee last December during a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He needed season-ending surgery and has spent the entire offseason rehabbing in Kansas City. The good news is that he has been on the field for the Chiefs' full offseason programme, including the final day of mandatory minicamp on Thursday. No official return date has been confirmed, but the fact that Kansas City opens with two primetime games in the first two weeks has fuelled plenty of speculation that he will be ready from day one.
What does Randi Mahomes' tribute tell us about Patrick's journey?
Ahead of what will be his 10th NFL season, Mahomes' mother Randi took to social media with a heartfelt tribute on June 10. "These years in the NFL have flown by, but watching you step into your purpose and chase your dreams has never stopped feeling special," she wrote, sharing a carousel of family photos. She added: "I am so proud of the man you are, on and off the field. Here's to your 10th year!"
Chiefs fans piled into the comments. "It's been a great 10 years. We've loved following the journey and cheering for #15 and the Chiefs," one supporter wrote. The affection is hard to separate from the results. Three Super Bowl wins. Two MVP awards. A career spent entirely in Kansas City since being drafted in 2017. The new contract is simply the sport putting a number on what everyone already knows.
