Melbourne Stars, Renegades set to merge into one BBL franchise in major shake-up
Melbourne's two Big Bash League franchises, the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, are reportedly set to merge into one team as part of a major change to the competition's structure.
According to Sen Cricket, Cricket Victoria staff were informed on Tuesday about plans to combine the two Melbourne-based teams into a single Victorian franchise.
The new side is not expected to carry the name Victoria because of Big Bash League regulations set by Cricket Australia. Instead, the team is likely to be known simply as Melbourne and will play its home matches at the MCG. The team could wear navy blue colours, while the nickname is yet to be decided, news agency ANI said quoting media reports.
Cricket Victoria has also agreed to sell one of its two BBL licences, though the timing of the sale will depend on Cricket Australia.
Discussions are also continuing regarding player contracts. According to the report, around 10 contracted players from each of the current franchises are expected to form the base of the new Melbourne team.
While staff were briefed about the plans, players had reportedly not been informed by Tuesday evening (AEST). Several players are understood to have learned about the development through other sources and were surprised by the news.
The proposed merger also creates uncertainty around the future use of venues including Marvel Stadium, GMHBA Stadium and Junction Oval.
A meeting has been scheduled in Melbourne on June 15 to discuss Cricket Australia's wider privatisation plans.
Former Melbourne Renegades general manager James Rosengarten is expected to become the general manager of the merged Melbourne franchise.
