... The Run Chase ...
Right, India Women walk into the break with a spring in their step. Sri Lanka Women? They need a revised DLS target of 271 runs in 47 overs, as per the host broadcasters. They’ve got the batters to chase, but after that sloppy fielding and losing grip at the death, can they really pull this off? Chase coming up…
Inoka Ranaweera is in for a chat. The Sri Lankan head coach, Rumesh Ratnayake, assists in translation. Inoka says that she stuck to her line and length and backed herself to do the job for the team. Shares that she did not start well but is happy with the way she executed later in the innings. Adds that she wanted to contain the runs and bowl defensively. Backs the batters to chase this total.
Sri Lanka’s bowling had firepower - Inoka was the standout with 4/46, showing why she’s their strike weapon. Udeshika Prabodhani’s new-ball spell was sharp, as she claimed two wickets, and even skipper Chamari chipped in. But those missed chances in the field were absolute killers, plus the discipline went missing in the last 2 overs, where they leaked 34 runs. From being on top at 124/6 to conceding 269/8, that’s a letdown they’ll regret.
But Deepti and Amanjot brought calm, grit, and then flair. They stitched a HUGE 103-run stand for the 7th wicket, the biggest partnership of the innings. Amanjot, riding her luck after multiple drops, made Sri Lanka pay with a gutsy half-century. Deepti matched her stroke for stroke, and both brought the fight back. Rain chopped the game down to 47 overs, but India turned that into an advantage, going full attack in the end overs. Rana’s late fireworks, including two towering sixes and two fours, sealed the momentum swing.
The innings began steadily but never fully settled. Smriti Mandhana fell early for just 8, not able to maintain her prolific opening stand with Pratika Rawal this time, and India managed 43/1 in the Powerplay before rain forced about a 75-minute break. Post-delay, Harleen Deol looked fluent, but Inoka Ranaweera flipped the script in one over - THREE wickets in five balls, sending Harleen, Jemimah, and skipper Harmanpreet packing. Add Richa Ghosh’s soft dismissal in the very next over, and India were reeling at 124/6. At that stage, even 200 looked like a dream.
What just happened? India were stumbling, rain was interrupting, wickets were tumbling… and still, they’ve posted 269/8 in 47 overs! Momentum? Oh yes, it’s all with them, thanks to the final two overs that exploded for 34 runs. Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma were the saviours in a pressure-cooker situation, and with Sneh Rana smashing 28 unbeaten off just 15 at the end, India turned what looked like 250-ish into a commanding total. Sri Lanka? They’ll be kicking themselves for dropping Amanjot four times.
Achini Kulasuriya to Deepti Sharma, OUT! CAUGHT! Deepti Sharma holes out on the final ball! India end up with 269 on the board!

Full and around middle, Amanjot sits down and tries to whack it. She attempts a big slog across the line but mistimes it off the inside half of the bat. The ball travels towards deep mid-wicket, where Vishmi Gunarathne runs across to her right, and plucks it with both extended hands just inside the boundary cushions.
