India vs South Africa 3rd Test Day 1 Highlights: Bumrah removes Elgar; South Africa 17/1 at stumps after India fold for 223

India fought their way to 75 for two in overcast conditions after losing their openers early on day one of the third Test against South Africa. Virat Kohli, back to lead the side after missing the second Test, opted to bat on a pitch with decent amount of grass and clouds hovering over the spectacular Newlands ground. The India skipper (15 batting) and Cheteshwar Pujara (26 batting) were out in the middle when lunch was taken. The South African pace combo of Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier made good use of the conditions in the first hour by removing Mayank Agarwal (15 off 35) and K L Rahul (12 off 35) respectively. Rabada, playing his 50th Test, targeted the off stump channel consistently while Olivier was able to bring the ball back in sharply on a pitch with good bounce and carry. The in-form Rahul, who has been brilliant at leaving the ball of late, poked at a rising delivery on the off stump and nicked it to the wicketkeeper. Agarwal's tendency to play the ball with hard hands led to his downfall as Rabada induced a thick edge off his bat with Aiden Markram doing the rest at second slip. Agarwal was dropped in the slips on 0 off Rabada in the third over of the innings. With India in a spot of bother 33 for two, Kohli and Pujara got together and steadied the ship. Pujara, once again, showed intent and was quick to put away the loose balls. His innings comprised four boundaries including a pull shot off Olivier. Kohli took 15 balls to get off the mark but it was worth the wait as he leaned into a beautiful cover drive off left-arm pacer Marco Jansen. Both looked in control after getting in, which augurs well for the visitors in the second session.

That's it! Lunch on Day 1. Marco Jansen completes the final over before the break. 7 runs came off it including a boundary. Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli go into the break unbeaten on 26 and 15 respectively. 75 runs and a couple of wickets in the session. India lost openers KL Rahul (12) and Mayank Agarwal (15) early in the session but Pujara and Kohli have steadied the Indian ship and looked in control. The partnership between them has got to 42* off 95 balls.

A tight over from Marco Jansen comes to an end. A maiden! All the deliveries were outside off from Jansen, teasing Virat Kohli but the India skipper has left all of them. So, a terrific hour of Test cricket in this series decider. India openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal showed some solid resistance at the start but have perished to Duanne Olivier and Kagiso Rabada after scoring 12 and 15 respectively. Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli are now in the middle, trying to steady the Indian ship. South Africa pacers have been relentless and they will look to do the same post the drinks break against the two new batters at the crease.

Breakthrough for South Africa! Back of length delivery just outside off from Duanne Olivier and it kept on rising after pitching. KL Rahul fishes for it and gets the outside edge. Wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne makes no mistake behind the stumps. South Africa were building pressure (24 consecutive dot balls) and they have finally been rewarded. Rahul departs for 12. A cracking contest between bat and ball in the first 40 minutes of this series decider. Mayank Agarwal got an early lifeline on nought but after that he and KL Rahul have looked pretty watchful against the Proteas attack in these overcast conditions. There were a couple of lovely shots from both KL and Mayank but pacers Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier have been asking some serious questions.

Duanne Olivier goes full just outside off and Mayank Agarwal, this time pushes it straight down the ground. Middles it to perfection as the ball races to the long-off fence. IND 20/0 after 5.3 overs

Kagiso Rabada goes full and into the pads. Mayank pushes the ball straight down the ground and it beats Lungi Ngidi at mid-on and races to the fence. IND 13/0 after 4.1 overs

Mayank Agarwal gets an early reprieve! Goes hard at the ball outside off. A thick-ish outside edge and Keegan Petersen dives to his right at third slip.
