India vs South Africa 3rd Test Day 1 Highlights: Bumrah removes Elgar; South Africa 17/1 at stumps after India fold for 223

That's it! Stumps on Day 1. Aiden Markram and nightwatchman Keshav Maharaj successfully negotiate the remaining overs after early departure of their skipper Dean Elgar. South Africa finish at 17 for one at close of play. They still trail India by 206 in first innings. Even though the Proteas lost Elgar (3) early but they still will be pretty happy with their efforts as they managed to fold India for 223. Virat Kohli's resilient 79 was a big talking point on Day 1 and so was Kagiso Rabada's (4/73) fiery spell. Markram and Majaraj end the day unbeaten on 8 and 6 respectively.

India were all out for 223 in their first innings on the opening day of the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. Batting first, India's returning skipper Virat Kohli top-scored for the visitors with a 79 off 201 balls, hitting 12 boundaries and a six in the process. Cheteshwar Pujara made 43 off 77 balls. Kohli, who had missed the second Test due to a back injury, looked on course for his first Test century in over two years until South Africa's lead pacer Kagiso Rabada cut short his innings. Playing in his 50th Test, Rabada finished with impressive figures of 4/73, while Marco Jansen snared 3/55.

India took the bold decision to bat first in this series deciding third and final Test in morning overcast conditions and it was a dull performance from the batters. Apart from Virat Kohli's resilient 79, it was overall a disappointing effort with the bat from India. The Proteas pacers were on fire and had their tails up throughout the day. They have done really well to restrict India to a par first innings total. Kagiso Rabada (4/73) finishes as the top wicket-taker for South Africa in the first innings. Marco Jansen also managed three wickets alongside Rabada.

Sensational stuff from Kagiso Rabada. He gets the big wicket of India skipper Virat Kohli. Rabada claims his fourth wicket. And the wait for the 71st Test ton continues for Kohli. Outside off from Rabada and the ball jags away after pitching. Kohli shuffles across to cover the line but gets beaten by the movement. The ball takes the outside edge of Kohli's bat and goes straight into keeper's gloves. A valiant effort from Kohli ends on 79. IND 211/9

A vicious bouncer from Kagiso Rabada and Jasprit Bumrah had no clue about it. Bumrah was in self-preservation mode. Plays it awkwardly! Gets a leading edge and Dean Elgar completes an easy catch at second slip. Bumrah walks back for a 9-ball duck. IND 210/8

Keshav Maharaj claims his first wicket of the series. Shardul Thakur goes forward to defend but hits it with hard hands. Keegan Petersen takes a sharp low catch at short cover. The umpires send it upstairs for a clean catch confirmation and replays clearly show that Petersen's fingers were under the ball as he took the catch. Shardul departs for 12. IND 205/7 after 67.4 overs

What a shot from Shardul Thakur. Hits Kagiso Rabada over point for a maximum. Short and wide outside off from Rabada and Shardul just threw his bat at it. Middles it as the ball sails over the fence.

Looks like Virat Kohli has decided to go for some quick runs now. Kohli slowly shifting gears. Two lovely shots from the India skipper off Marco Jansen in front of the wicket. Timing on both of them was absolutely sensational. Kohli moves to 69. IND 188/6 after 64.4 overs

Marco Jansen strikes again. Claims his third wicket. India are now 6 down with just 175 runs on the board in the first innings. Jansen, from over the wicket, bowls just outside off and the angle takes the ball further away. The ball takes the outside edge of Ashwin's bat and goes straight into keeper's gloves. Ashwin walks back for 2.

Marco Jansen comes back into the attack and is in action straightaway. A short delivery just outside off from Jansen and the ball kept on rising. Pant tries to steer it to third-man fence but is not able to control the ball. Gets in an awkward position and hits it straight to Keegan Petersen at gully. Pant walks back for 27. IND 167/5 after 60.3 overs

A superb knock from the India skipper. Virat Kohli gets to his 28th Test fifty off 158 balls. An innings of patience and discipline under pressure! A solid knock was needed from Virat and he has delivered it. A courageous fifty to start the year! India were in trouble when Virat arrived at the crease and he superbly has held one end. But the job is still not done. He has now got to reach to the three figure mark from here! IND 167/4 after 59.5 overs
