Meanwhile, in Galle, draw seems to be getting the biggest vote from everywhere. At Stumps, On Day 4, Bangladesh are 177/3 against Sri Lanka, with a total lead of 187. 98 overs are scheduled to be bowled on Day 5, on Saturday. But it has to involve a miraculous turn of events to get anything other than a draw. Adelaide, 2006 or Kolkata, 2001, perhaps? Meanwhile, here's Chris Woakes. 7-1-22-0 so far.

Full, around off, Gill works it towards short mid-wicket and takes off for a quick single. Ollie Pope comes charging in and has a shy at the bowler's end but misses. Had he hit, Gill was a goner. But unfortunately for the vice captain, the ball misses the stumps and with no backup, races away to the long off fence!
Brydon Carse to Shubman Gill, Full and angled into the pads, trying to slip one between bat and pad, Gill flicks it away to square leg.

Welcome back. As mentioned, the conditions have gone overcast and the England seamers will hope that they reap some advantage of the same. The new Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, walks in at number 4, replacing Sai Sudharsan. Stokes to finish his pending over.
Ben Stokes to Shubman Gill, On a length, outside off, Shubman Gill shoulders arms.
... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
Amidst all this, a milestone is on the cusp of getting broken. The catch which Joe Root took to dismiss Rahul was his 209th in Test cricket and he is now just 2 away from becoming the player with the most catches in Tests as a fielder. Rahul Dravid has 210 to his name. And this guy can field anywhere. Give him the helmet and he will come and stand close to the batter. Ask him to stand anywhere, he will take blinders. And with the conditions suddenly getting overcast, he might expect some more stuff to come to him post Lunch.
Talking about England, the seamers were inconsistent with their lines and lengths throughout the session. The inexperience was showing in their bowling, as, apart from skipper Ben Stokes, no one looked threatening. They will do well to admit that they got away with two freebies to get something very fruitful from an otherwise ordinary session. Stokes bowled with purpose and made the ball talk. But even he would not have expected to get a debutant caught down the leg side. Yeah yeah... we all know what did Harmison do to Ponting at Old Trafford in 2005, but still, that was not a wicket-taking ball. Nor was this one.
Despite those last 6 balls, India got a massive positive through Yashasvi Jaiswal. Yes, this kid played superbly in Australia against better bowlers but to play against the Kookaburra ball is different and to play against the Dukes ball is totally different. While Rahul was a bit more cautious at his end, Jaiswal was the mixture of caution and aggression, not exactly Bazballing, but doing well to make the bowlers get off their lines and lengths. For example, batting outside the crease and walking towards the bowler to negotiate the swing. Now, when you play such an innings, you are bound to play a couple of flashy strokes which Jaiswal did too, but luckily for him, he did not edge it. But what was impressive was the way he left the ball, which means he knows where his off stump is. He has got a start and is on 42, but will have to restart, especially for the first 30 minutes after the break.
Both captains wanted to field as there is usually plenty of movement on offer. But the ball barely moved in the first hour and the Indian openers negotiated it in a decent manner, as they were selective in leaving anything outside off. Additionally, they were going hard at anything overpitched and in their arc. There were a few LBW appeals here and there, but apart from that, the openers didn’t give anything away. It was an eventless session before KL played a loose drive and nicked one to Root at first slip. They say one brings two, and that's exactly what happened, as Sai Sudharsan on debut, looked nervous in his brief stay and ended up edging one to the keeper, down the leg side off Stokes' delivery.
Have to say, England will be overjoyed at the session result, while India will be bitterly disappointed. At the toss, if you had given this score to Shubman Gill, he would have taken it. However, given that his team was on the platform of a superb wicketless morning session and both wickets fell because of lapse in concentration, lunch will taste very bitter for the visiting captain.
Ben Stokes to Sai Sudharsan, OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! This time there is bat and Midas strikes in the last over before Lunch! Again, not the best of balls to get a wicket but one can understand the nervousness in Sai Sudharsan. Imagine this - you are playing your first Test for your country and are on 0. You then get a juicy half volley, down the leg side. Would you have the heart to let it go or pounce on the opportunity to flick it away and get off the mark? Sudharsan got two opportunities on the last two balls and unfortunately for him, could not make use of either. He looks to tickle this fine but while he missed on the previous ball, could only get some tickle of the bat on this one. The ball flew behind and the keeper, Jamie Smith, made no mistake, springing to his right to take the catch. The English players appeal in unison but Sudharsan walks off. From 91/0, INDIA ARE 92/2 AND THAT WILL BE LUNCH ON DAY 1!
Ben Stokes to Sai Sudharsan, Appeal for caught behind but the umpire remains unmoved. A nervous start for the debutant. Stokes bowls it on a length and angles it onto the pads, Sai Sudharsan looks to flick it away but misses and the ball goes off the pads. Jamie Smith puts in a good dive to his right to take that.
Ben Stokes to Sai Sudharsan, No run there! Nagging length, on the fuller side and angled across the left-hander. Sai Sudharsan prods and pushes at it with soft hands. The ball goes off the outside edge but wide of the slip cordon where the fielder makes a half stop. Sai thinks about the single but is sent back.
Ben Stokes to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Drop and run! Hard length around the top of off, Jaiswal pats it down in front of covers and scampers through for a single.
Brydon Carse to Sai Sudharsan, Full, around off, swinging in, Sai Sudharsan looks to defend but gets hit on the pads, due to the late swing. A mild appeal for LBW but no real conviction. A wicket maiden for Carse!
With around 7 minutes to go for Lunch, Test cap number 317 for India, Sai Sudharsan, walks in at number 3, replacing KL Rahul.
Brydon Carse to KL Rahul, OUT! CAUGHT! At long last, England get the opening wicket! A rare mistake from Rahul and it proves to be costly. This seems to be that kind of a pitch where the bowlers might get wickets more because of the batters' mistakes and for the last few minutes now, the hosts have been trying to make the batters play some loose shots. Rahul got away with one earlier but not this time. The ball is full and the line is wide outside off. KL Rahul goes hard on the drive at that but only succeeds in getting a thick outside edge. The ball flies quickly to first slip but Joe Root is alert to pouch it reverse cup. After watching a plethora of balls drop short in the slip cordon at Lord's in the WTC final, this comes as a pleasant relief for the seamers. Carse is overjoyed while Rahul walks off shaking his head. It was a great innings no doubt, but having faced 77 balls prior to this one and made 42 runs, additionally, with less than 10 minutes for Lunch, he would have known better to let the ball go. INDIA are 91/1.
Brydon Carse to KL Rahul, Full, outside off, swinging away, but pretty wide. Easily left alone.
Brydon Carse to KL Rahul, Bangs it in now and bowls it over middle, getting the ball to angle in with some extra bounce. Rahul hops and does well to just fend it to the on side.
Brydon Carse to KL Rahul, This one is bowled full and on off, Rahul shows the full face of the bat and blocks it firmly to mid off.
Brydon Carse to KL Rahul, Just back of a length, darted in towards middle, Rahul stays back and blocks it off.
The last 5 Test series results between England and India in England have gone in favour of the home team, with India winning just 1 in 2007. England have won 3 of the last 5 series in the UK with the last one in 2021-22 being a drawn one.
Ben Stokes to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Overpitched, around off, Yashasvi drives it towards mid off.
Ben Stokes to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mixup, but safe. Full and down the leg side, Jaiswal looks to flick but misses and is hit on the pads. The ball rolls away towards mid-wicket and the southpaw wants the single but is sent back. Jaiswal argues with Rahul that there was a single on offer but from Rahul's perspective, you don't want needless quick singles with around 10 minutes to go for Lunch.
Ben Stokes to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Back of a length, outside off, Yashasvi Jaiswal punches it straight to gully.
Ben Stokes to Yashasvi Jaiswal, FOUR! These two aren't letting the bad balls go unpunished. Too full and wide, Yashasvi Jaiswal leans on and extends his arms before creaming the cover drive square on the off side for a boundary.
Ben Stokes to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Bowled full again, this time very straight and Jaiswal punches it back to the bowler.
Ben Stokes to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nagging length, pitching on the fourth stump line and just sliding right across. YJ puts his front foot across and leaves it alone.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is one of the best openers in Tests. He is the only opener to have an average of above 50 in Tests since 2024.
Brydon Carse to KL Rahul, FOUR! FANTASTIC! KL Rahul is in some serious mood as he moves to 42! He has not missed many when there has been width on offer and he does not miss out now. Overpitched, wide outside off, Rahul leans, gets to the pitch of the ball and drives it beautifully through the covers! That's his 8th four.
Brydon Carse to KL Rahul, Around off, pushed towards cover.
Brydon Carse to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Great stop. Fractionally short, outside off, Yashasvi Jaiswal goes back and lashes out the cut shot. The fielder at gully springs to his right and gets a hand to it, saving the boundary. Just the single.
Brydon Carse to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Slightly short and angled across off, Jaiswal throws his hands at it but is beaten by the pace and bounce.
Brydon Carse to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Oh, was there an edge? No, there wasn't! Lovely delivery nonetheless from Carse. Bowls it on a three-quarter length on off and gets the ball to nip away at 140 kph. Yashasvi Jaiswal looks to defend with a straight bat but the ball just wobbles past the outside edge.
Brydon Carse to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Good length, just angling down leg, Jaiswal looks to nudge it fine but misses.
Wow. 9 years! Raman Bhanot on air informs us that it has been 9 years since a visiting team faced more than 20 overs through their openers in England!
