IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Match Day 2: Will Shubman Gill score a double century on captaincy debut?

India vs England Live Cricket Score, 1st Test Day 2: England fought back through Ollie Pope’s unbeaten century but Jasprit Bumrah’s triple strike ensured India held the upper hand at stumps on Day 2 of the first Test at Headingley. England ended the day at 209/3, trailing India by 262 runs.

Pope, who survived a couple of early chances, brought up his ninth Test ton in 131 deliveries, hitting 13 fours. He was particularly strong square of the wicket and remained composed even as wickets fell at the other end. He was joined by Harry Brook (0*) at stumps.

Bumrah was the standout for India, finishing with figures of 3/48. He removed Zak Crawley in the first over, then came back to dismiss a well-set Ben Duckett for 62, and later trapped Joe Root with a delivery that angled in and seamed away sharply — his 10th dismissal of Root in Tests.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 471, having resumed on 359/3. Shubman Gill (147), Rishabh Pant (134), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) were the major contributors. Despite a middle-order collapse, the total gave India a strong platform.

With the pitch still offering movement and uneven bounce, the third day promises more action as India aim to dismantle England’s middle order and push for a first-innings lead.

Brydon Carse to KL Rahul, Excellent ball. On a length, around off, KL Rahul looks to defend but the ball pitches and then seams away, past the outside edge.

The on-air commentators are still not sure about the toss decision. Michael Atherton informs us that on Thursday, there was much more grass on this pitch and a lot of it seems to have disappeared in a day. Additionally, with the sun beating down and the ball not swinging much, this is looking to be a good pitch to bat upon and also, could end up being a good toss to lose.

Chris Woakes to KL Rahul, Good effort by Ollie Pope. Full, outside off, KL Rahul looks to work it through the leg side but the ball swings away and takes the inner half of the bat. Scoots through mid-wicket and Pope gives it a chase from mid on. Gets to the ball near the fence and pulls it back in, just inside the ropes. The third umpire wants to check whether Pope has touched the rope or not, while pushing the ball back and the replay confirms that the fielding is fine. Two runs taken.

Uh oh... just 5 overs into the match and we already have a warning. A friendly warning, as might be it. Umpire Chris Gaffaney is not happy with the landing area of Woakes and brings it to his attention. Woakes tries to be cheeky and walk past Gaffaney but the umpire calls his name out loudly and grabs his attention. Shows the areas where his followthrough his ending up and asks him to stay away from the danger area.

The national anthems have been sung and the players march out to the middle again for the highly anticipated Test series and match to begin. Some ex cricketers from England have already named this as a 'warmup' for the 'more important' Ashes later this year, Down Under, earning a lot of criticism from the world. India, on the other hand, will be keen to showcase their talent to the world. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul will open for the visiting side and Chris Woakes will start off proceedings to Jaiswal. Here we go.

15:25 (IST) Jun 20

The players make their way out to the middle for their respective national anthems. Before the anthems, a minute's silence will be observed as a mark of respect to the victims of the Ahmedabad tragedy on 12th June, 2025. Everyone stands in respect. The players are also wearing black-arm bands on their jerseys. Time for the anthems then. The Indian national anthem will be sung first, given that India are the visiting side.

India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Match: Shubman Gill made a stunning start to his captaincy era with an unbeaten century as India dominated England on the opening day of the first Test at Headingley. Gill, batting on 127 not out, combined classy stroke-play with calm authority after opener Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed 101 in an impressive display of India’s young batting depth.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl backfired for Ben Stokes, as India piled up 359-3 at stumps. KL Rahul laid the foundation with a steady 42 while sharing a solid 91-run opening stand with Jaiswal. Although England grabbed two quick wickets before lunch — dismissing Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan for a duck — Gill and Jaiswal rebuilt with a 129-run partnership.

After Jaiswal’s dismissal just after tea, the aggressive Rishabh Pant joined Gill and hammered an unbeaten 65, including a remarkable six off Chris Woakes in the day’s final over, adding to England’s woes.

Despite missing retired stars James Anderson and Stuart Broad, and injury-hit pacers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, England’s attack struggled on a true batting pitch under clear skies. As India aim for only their fourth Test series win in England, Gill’s calm leadership and Jaiswal’s fearless batting promise a bright new era post Rohit and Kohli.
