The jinx has finally been broken. Ending a 742-day wait, four final heartbreaks and eight semifinal exits, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made a strong comeback after losing the first game to emerge triumphant in the Singapore Open Super-750 tournament on Sunday. The former world No.1 pair survived several anxious moments before getting past Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri of Indonesia 18-21, 2117, 21-16 in a nerve-rattling one hour 13-minute contest.Despite possessing immense talent and beating all the top te-ams with authority, the Indian pair was unlucky not to finish on the top of the podium over the last two years. Such was the relief after enduring so much disappointment that both Indians converted the court into a mini dance floor to celebrate their victory. The maiden triumph in Singapore is their third Super-750 title after their French Open victories in 2022 and 2024.They had also won the Indonesia Super-1000 in 2023.Thrilled after the victory, Sat-wik said, “I am a bit numb today as we have won a title after a gap of two years. Before coming here, we were a bit nervous because we had not done very well here in the past. But this week is special.”After losing the first game, the Indians secured a 14-8 lead in the second.Though the Indonesians reduced the margin to 13-15, Satwik-Chirag pushed ahead to score big points towards the end. In the third game, the Indians secured a decisive advantage, winning five straight points from 1-2 to move to 6-2. The Indians did well to hang on to the lead, though their rivals pushed hard.Chirag admitted the contest demanded a lot out of them. “It was very intense. We knew when we got onto the court that it would be a cracker of a game and that it will go on till the very end. I think for the audience, especially, it was a very good game and for us as well,” said Chirag, adding that they knew a win will come.“Two years! We knew for a fact that eventually the win would come. We had that belief and it was just a matter of time and finally we got it,” he added. The game plan of the Indians was to control the early phase. “With the Indonesians or Malaysians, it’s mainly about the first four shots. They are very good with those shots. If they put us under pressure, they always end up on top. So you must focus on the first three and not focus on the front court ... I felt they were under pressure when we were chasing,” Satwik said.An Se Young, Alex Lanier champsTop seed An Se Young of South Korea and unseeded Alex Lanier of France won the women’s and men’s singles titles.
