7 Indian architects from history who shaped the way for generations to follow

The history of architecture in India is a history of cultural pluralism, aestheticism and technical ingenuity. Since ancient temple constructors up to contemporary urban designers, there are numerous architects that contributed to the formation of the built environment of the country. Not only did their work shape the skyline of cities, it also shaped architectural thought in the generations to come.


A number of Indian architects blended the old design concepts with the new construction methods to come up with architectural designs that are still powerful. They have contributed to iconic state buildings, institutions of learning, cultural sites and city planning projects around the nation. Below are seven such architects whose contributions permanently shaped Indian architecture.

Balkrishna Doshi

Balkrishna Doshi is widely regarded as one of India’s most influential modern architects. A pioneer of sustainable and socially responsive architecture, he focused on affordable housing and climate-sensitive design. His works, reflect his belief that architecture should serve communities. In 2018, he became the first Indian architect to receive the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize.

Charles Correa

Charles Correa played a major role in shaping post-independence Indian architecture. Known for integrating traditional Indian elements with modern design, he created structures that respond to climate and culture. One of his well-known projects is the Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur. Correa also contributed significantly to urban planning and housing, influencing how Indian cities developed during the late twentieth century.

Laurie Baker

Laurie Baker was famous for promoting cost-effective and environmentally friendly architecture in India. Anant Raje was a respected architect who worked closely with Balkrishna Doshi and contributed to many significant projects.
