8 quick and easy Good Friday long weekend trips from Mumbai

A Good Friday long weekend is one of those rare breaks that feels perfectly timed, just enough days to step away from routine without needing extensive planning. For those in Mumbai, this long weekend opens up a range of quick yet fulfilling getaways, from breezy coastal towns to mist-covered hillscapes in the Western Ghats. What makes these trips especially appealing is not just the destination, but the ease of getting there, most are within a few hours’ drive, making them ideal for a relaxed, unhurried escape.

2/9

Alibaug

Just about 2-3 hours from Mumbai, either via the road from Panvel or via the ferry from the Gateway of India, Alibaug continues to be one of the most accessible beach destinations from the city. Alibaug Beach is popular for the views of the Kolaba fort, which can be accessed either on foot during low tide or via a short boat ride. Kihim Beach, on the other hand, provides a more secluded experience in a greener environment. As there are a number of options in the area, from homestays to boutique villas, Alibaug can be an equally wonderful experience for a relaxed family holiday or a quick escape from the noise of the city.

3/9

Lonavala

Just about 2 hours from Mumbai via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Lonavala is perhaps the most effortless hill escape from the city. The drive itself is beautiful, especially when entering the Sahyadris. In addition, there are viewing points such as Tiger’s Leap and Lion’s Point, which provide a wonderful view of the valleys below. If one is in the mood for some adventure, treks to the Rajmachi fort or the Lohagad fort are possible from here.

4/9

Igatpuri

Located about 2.5 to 3 hours from Mumbai via the Nashik highway, Igatpuri provides an alternative, less busy hill experience compared to Lonavala. Situated in the Western Ghats, the area is popular for the dramatic scenery, particularly in the vicinity of Tringalwadi Fort and Bhatsa River Valley. Igatpuri is also home to the Vipassana International Academy, perfect for those interested in meditation.

5/9

Malshej Ghat

About 3 to 4 hours from Mumbai, Malshej Ghat is a mountain pass located in an area far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. While it is most popular during the peak monsoon, the area is equally breathtaking outside the monsoon season due to the cliffs and valleys created in the landscape. The drive to Malshej Ghat is an experience in itself, passing through the rough terrain via winding roads.

6/9

Murud

Located at a distance of 4 to 5 hours from Mumbai, Murud is a good choice if you are ready to travel a little longer for a peaceful beach experience. The major tourist spot is the Murud Janjira fort, an impregnable fort that was never conquered, and can be reached through a short boat trip to Rajpuri village. The beach is also less commercialized compared to Alibaug, providing a relaxing experience. The relaxing atmosphere and lack of crowds make this a good choice for a long weekend getaway.

7/9

Bhandardara

Bhandardara is an offbeat destination, 4 hours away from Mumbai, and is known for its natural beauty rather than its tourist facilities. The trip through Igatpuri is scenic, and the place slowly unfolds to offer a glimpse into the beautiful lakes and hills. The major tourist spot is Arthur Lake, often surrounded by serene locations and resorts or campsites. The Wilson Dam and Randha Falls are also a part of this beautiful experience, while the Kalsubai Peak towers over this area.

8/9

Karjat

Located just about 1.5 to 2 hours away from Mumbai, Karjat is one of the easiest weekend getaways from Mumbai. The proximity of Karjat makes it an excellent choice if you want to spend more time enjoying your weekend rather than wasting it in transit. Karjat has a lot to offer, including treks to Peth Fort, exploring Kondana Caves, and simply relaxing in a riverside villa or farmhouse.

9/9

Sinhagad Fort

Located 3.5 to 4 hours away from Mumbai, near Pune, Sinhagad Fort offers a slightly different experience from the usual weekend getaways from Mumbai. The fort is reachable either through a trek or a drive almost till the top, making it suitable for all kinds of travellers. Besides the scenic view of the Sahyadris, Sinhagad Fort has some historical significance, especially in relation to Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare. The fort makes a good combination with a visit to Pune, adding a cultural and gastronomical experience to your weekend.
