Surfing Santa: 5 countries in the world that celebrate summer Christmas

Christmas, for much of the world population, is synonymous with winter chills, snowfall, fireplace and warm woollen sweaters. But south of the equator, the Christmas scenes are completely opposite. In some parts of the world, Christmas celebration is all about sun, sand and sunshine. In many countries, Christmas falls right in the middle of summer, which looks absolutely otherworldly and different from our regular classic wintery image of Santa Claus bringing gifts hiding in his socks and riding on his sleigh.

Summer Christmas may lack snow, but it is equally magical. From beachside barbecues in Australia to tropical nights in Brazil, these countries show that Christmas joy is not about climate. So welcome to the world of Summer Christmas, where Santa comes surfing and hides gifts under the sand. Let’s have a look at five countries that are known for their summer Christmas.

2/6

Australia

Australia is the iconic destination to celebrate a summer Christmas. December temperatures here often reach 30°C. People are seen celebrating Christmas on sand instead of snow which is such a remarkable view. Winter jackets and hats are replaced by summer shorts and tan creams on Christmas. Families gather outdoors for barbecues and picnics. Cities like Sydney and Melbourne enjoy under the summer sun. “Surfing Santa” is the most awesome sight here.

3/6

New Zealand

New Zealand also celebrates Christmas in peak summer. People go to beaches, lakes and countryside to relax and enjoy picnics with family. A uniquely Kiwi symbol of Christmas is the pohutukawa tree. It blooms bright red flowers in December and is also known as ‘New Zealand’s Christmas tree’. The celebration is centred around seasonal food and fruits including cherries and berries, grilled meats and salads.

4/6

South Africa

Christmas in South Africa means festive feasts in the summer heat! In South Africa, Christmas Day often brings hot and sunny weather. Families celebrate with outdoor lunches, garden parties and barbecues. While roast meats and puddings remain popular, they are adapted for warmer conditions. Wildlife reserves and coastal destinations see a surge in holiday travel, as many South Africans use the festive season to combine Christmas with summer vacations.

5/6

Argentina and Chile

Argentina and Chile also celebrated summer Santa with late night meals. Christmas is celebrated during long, warm summer evenings. Families typically gather on Christmas Eve and fireworks at midnight are common. The festive atmosphere spills into the streets, with neighbourhoods staying awake late into the night. For many, Christmas is as much about togetherness and celebration as it is about embracing the joys of summer.

6/6

Brazil

Brazil’s Christmas is all about fireworks. Though the country experiences summer heat, festive decorations still feature snowflake images. Christmas Eve is the main event, marked by large family dinners. The food includes turkey, rice dishes and tropical fruits. In cities like Rio de Janeiro, celebrations mean beach gatherings and late-night festivities.
