From the Netherlands to South Africa 8 countries that have more than 1 capital

Countries with more than one capital are unique in how they distribute governmental responsibilities across different cities, often due to historical, political, or practical reasons.

Not all countries have just one capital city. Some have more than one, each having specific roles, be it administrative, legislative, or judicial functions. These multiple capitals may help the governments in their practical needs to spread their functions across different cities. This arrangement can help manage diverse populations, distribute economic activity, or maintain political stability.

Here are eight countries known for having multiple capitals.

2/9

The Netherlands

The Netherlands has two main capitals. Amsterdam is the official and royal capital, known for its cultural and historical significance. The Hague serves as the administrative capital where the government, parliament, and the International Court of Justice are located, making it the center for national and international governance.

3/9

Eswatini

Eswatini, located in southern Africa, has Mbabane as its administrative capital, hosting most government offices. Lobamba is the legislative and royal capital where the national parliament and the king’s residence are found, reflecting the country’s traditional monarchy system.

4/9

Yemen

In Yemen, Sanaa is the official capital and center of government, while Aden serves as the executive capital. Aden’s role has grown especially due to historical reasons and its strategic port, acting as an economic and administrative hub.

5/9

Tanzania

Dodoma is Tanzania’s official and legislative capital, where the government parliament resides. Dar es Salaam remains the major commercial city and the location of many government offices, including the judiciary, making it an important administrative center.

6/9

South africa

South Africa uniquely has three capitals. Pretoria is the administrative and executive capital, hosting the president’s offices. Cape Town is the legislative capital where the national parliament meets, and Bloemfontein serves as the judicial capital, housing the Supreme Court of Appeal.

7/9

Benin

Porto Novo is the official capital of Benin, known for its rich history and cultural heritage. It is located on the southeastern coast and served as a key port during the transatlantic slave trade. While Porto Novo hosts the national legislature and some government offices, the larger city of Cotonou is the economic heart, the main port, and where most government institutions operate. Cotonou is also the country’s largest city and commercial center, making both cities crucial to Benin’s governance and economy.

8/9

Bolivia

Bolivia has Sucre as its constitutional capital and seat of the Supreme Court. La Paz is the executive and legislative capital, hosting the government offices and the national legislature. La Paz is also the administrative center and the de facto capital for most government functions.

9/9

Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the official administrative capital of Sri Lanka. Colombo, the largest city, acts as the commercial and judicial capital, hosting many government institutions and acting as the economic center.
