From Bawali to Kurseong: Bengal’s offbeat places that are way more fun

India’s third largest city, Kolkata is one of those places in the country that is rich in culture and history. There is mishti doi, the chaos, art, bustling markets, iconic landmarks that somehow can keep a traveller busy throughout his trip. But beneath all these, the love for this city is something that we swear by for sure. There’s, however, much more to this state though. If you have visited this place already, and have done it all, it’s time to trade your city blues for Bengal’s best-kept village secrets.
Because some of West Bengal’s coolest experiences are happening far, far away from the metro grid, in villages with more coolness than you could have thought. So, here's your offbeat itinerary. (Canva)

2/6

Kurseong

This place is all about a place where your tea has a view of mist-drenched hills, colonial cottages, and a toy train chugging past like it’s stuck in some past era. Kurseong might be classified as a small-town, but its vibes are big-league. It’s cooler, quieter, and more photogenic than anything you’ll find between Gariahat and Salt Lake. (Canva)

3/6

Jhargram

Once upon a time, Jhargram was royal. Now, it has more of a rustic appeal. This forest-fringed place comes complemented with palaces, peacocks, and sal trees.Enjoy nature walks, quiet picnics, and conversations with locals over steaming cups of cha. Elephant corridors, ancient temples, and zero chance of bumping into your office colleague. (Canva)

4/6

Shantiniketan’s Kopai villages

Move over, Tagore tours. The real Shantiniketan charm lies just beyond the Visva-Bharati gates, in villages like Surul, Ruppur, and Kopai, where you might encounter baul singers, and the rustic charm that can’t be ignored. The sunsets here? Full cinema. Earth houses, artisan workshops, and cultural vibes so rich, your soul will feel well-fed. (Canva)

5/6

Bawali

Just 35 km from Kolkata lies Bawali, this village has gained a slow cult following thanks to its beautifully restored Rajbari (a palace turned heritage stay). Vintage chandeliers, lily ponds, and the kind of peace that you might not get anywhere else. Sleep like royalty. Eat like royalty. Instagram like royalty.

6/6

Taki

A border town by the Ichamati River, Taki is where West Bengal ends and Bangladesh begins, quite literally. Locals wave to each other from across the river. You, meanwhile, can enjoy a boat ride, munch on muri-ghugni, and experience the beauty of time passing by. (Canva)
