Curve ahead! India’s 5 most twisted roads to test your driving skills

Not all road trips are created equal—some come with hairpin bends, unexpected detours, and just enough confusion to keep things interesting. In a country as geographically diverse as India, a simple drive can turn into an adventure of curves and chaos. You will find mountain passes, looping valley roads, and drives that aren’t just scenic—they’ll test your steering skills and your sense of direction. Ready to hit the road? Just don’t forget your nerves (and maybe a backup GPS)!

2/6

Kinnaur Roads, Himachal Pradesh—Cliff -hugging chaos

If for love crazy road trips, it would be Kinnaur Road. Cut out of sheer cliffs, they tend to have overhanging sections and blind turns and run along deep gorges. With each turn comes a drop and a suspenseful moment.

3/6

Kolli Hills Road, Tamil Nadu—70 Hairpin bends

Dubbed the "Mountains of Death," the road to Kolli Hills is renowned for having 70 uninterrupted hairpin bends. Spanning a distance of merely 30 km, these bends twist their way up the Eastern Ghats like a rollercoaster. The journey, despite its name, offers breathtaking views of rolling hills and mists, forests, and waterfalls, where you won't be able to take your eyes away from the road.

4/6

Neral-Matheran Hill Railway Road, Maharashtra—Spiral loops

Although the toy train at Matheran is a celebrated affair, the ascending road winding its way up there is a trial by patience and finesse. This road bends ceaselessly along the Sahyadris in a compact spiral, presenting whiplash-like sights and sharp hairpin turns that leave even GPS confused.

5/6

Chalakudy–Valparai Road, Kerala–Tamil Nadu Border—Jungle curves

This road is an arrow-straight, forested rollercoaster of hairpin curves, where you might find out-of-nowhere fog, and surprise wildlife crossings. Featuring more than 40 hairpin bends, verdant green environments, a trip on this route will be a twisty one, but one to remember.

6/6

Zoji La Pass, Ladakh—Icy, narrow, and Nerve-wracking

Connecting Srinagar to Leh, Zoji La Pass is one of the highest and most perilous passes in India. Located at 11,649 ft above sea level, this narrow route is often just a mud track carved into the mountainside. Add snow, landslides, and barely any guardrails, and you’ve got a drive that’s more adrenaline-pumping than any amusement park ride.
