The transition of Shani (planet Saturn) is one of the most-awaited celestial events of the year which will take place on March 28, 2025. The planet holds immense importance in Hindu mythology and devotees believe that praying to Lord Shani can help lessen or negate the negative effects. It is said praying at Shani temple can bring prosperity and fulfill wishes of the devotees.
India is home to myriad ancient temples which are exclusively dedicated to Lord Shani. These temples have interesting stories. Let’s have a look at five of the oldest and most revered Shani temples in India:

Shani Shingnapur (Maharashtra)

Shani Shingnapur in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra is the most revered and famous Shani temple in India. The temple is unique in many senses and is noted for its open-air sanctum. It is here where devotees can see Lord Shani’s idol. Made of black stone, the idol is believed to be self-incarnated. People suffering from Shani’s negativities make sure to visit the temple to seek his blessings and get relief from malefic influences. Shani Shingnapur is a village with the most fascinating tradition of villagers having no lock in their homes. They say that Lord Shani is their protector.

Shani Temple at Pedaganjam (Andhra Pradesh)

Peddaganjam is a small village in Andhra Pradesh known for being home to one of the oldest Shani temples in south India. The temple is said to be over 1,000 years old and is noted for its idol of Lord Shani. Devotees visit this temple to offer prayers, especially during Shani Jayanti (the birthday of Lord Shani).

Kheda Shani Mandir (Gujarat)

Kheda Shani Mandir in the Kheda district is believed to be the oldest temple dedicated to Lord Shani. It is said that the temple is over 2,000 years old and holds particular significance during the Shani Amavasya. Kheda Shani Temple is also noted for its unique idol which is carved from a single black stone. It depicts him riding a buffalo which adds to the uniqueness of the temple.

Shani Dham (Delhi)

Though a new addition, the Shani Dham in Delhi is famous for being home to the highest Shani idols in India. The temple was inaugurated in 2003 and has a grand statue black stone statue of Lord Shani. Devotees visiting the temple offer oil and black sesame seeds to the deity. The temple is built in a quiet place and the ambience is peaceful, offering a much-needed spiritual escape.

Thirunallar Shani Temple (Tamil Nadu)

Thirunallar Shani Temple in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu is also counted among most significant and oldest Shani temples in India. It is said that the temple was built some 1,500 years ago and that worshipping here can alleviate the bad karma of people. Devotees flock to this temple during the Shani Amavasya to seek lord’s blessings.
