5 iconic Shiva temples in India to visit this Maha Shivratri 2026

Maha Shivaratri is arguably one of the most spiritual and vibrant Hindu festivities. Celebrated on the 14th night of the lunar month in Phalguna, devotees choose to fast, practice meditation, and chant mantras visiting Shiva temples. In various regions of India, Shiva temples have become hubs of heightened spiritual fervor as people come to pay homage to God Shiva during Maha Shivaratri (February 15, dates may vary). Stretching from ancient Jyotirlingams to seaside shrines and mountain temples, each of these is a unique spiritual experience in its own right. Are you planning to visit these spiritual temples sometime in 2026?

Here’s a list of five iconic Shiva temples to experience Maha Shivaratri like never before.

2/6

Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Situated in the revered city of Varanasi on the banks of the River Ganga, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is an important temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is considered one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The title ‘Vishwanath’ signifies ‘Lord of the Universe.’ The city of Varanasi is considered to be the chosen spot for Lord Shiva’s eternal abode. The city is visited by pilgrims from all over the country at different times of the year, but during Maha Shivaratri, the setting is completely transformed.

3/6

Somnath Temple in Gujarat

The Somnath Temple, located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, is said to be the first of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple has seen its fair share of history, with periods of destruction and reconstruction. Today, the temple stands out for its beauty and history. The backdrop of the temple is majestic, with waves constantly pounding the shore just at its rear. On Maha Shivaratri, thousands of devotees throng the temple and pour milk, water, and bilva leaves on the Shivling. Special aartis and cultural programmes are organised throughout the day and night.

4/6

Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain is another revered Jyotirlinga and holds a unique distinction, it is the only south-facing (Dakshinamurti) Jyotirlinga among the twelve. The deity is worshipped as Mahakal, the Lord of Time and Death. The temple is particularly famous for its Bhasma Aarti performed early in the morning. The ritual involves the sprinkling of sacred ashes on the deity. Watching this ceremony is considered to be a spiritual experience. On the occasion of Mahashivaratri, the city celebrates with a grand festival with decorated processions, musical events, and rituals conducted at the temple.

5/6

Sahasralinga, Karnataka

Unlike grand temple complexes or towering gopurams, Sahasralinga provides an altogether different, and incredibly interesting, experience of Shiva worship. Situated on the banks of the Shalmala river near Sirsi in Karnataka, Sahasralinga is home to hundreds—or traditionally, thousands—of Shiva lingas crafted on rocks located on the riverbed. The very name “Sahasralinga” means the “thousand lingas.” These are traditionally said to have been created during the Vijayanagara era under the patronage of some local king as an act of dedication. Many of the lingas are accompanied by carvings of Nandi, Shiva’s sacred bull. During the monsoon, the river partially submerges the lingas. While it is not a temple in the traditional sense, Sahasralinga is undeniably a sacred Shaivite site.

6/6

Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu

Ramanathaswamy Temple is situated on Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu. The temple is important not only as one of the Jyotirlinga temples but also as one of the four temples that form the circuit of Char Dham yatra. The temple is particularly famous for its impressive corridors, which are among the longest in the world. The intricately decorated pillars are mighty impressive. Special rituals are performed during Maha Shivaratri.
