10 hill stations to escape from Delhi-NCR’s toxic air this winter

As Delhi-NCR grapples with choking smog and hazardous air quality every winter, escaping to the hills isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity for clean lungs and peace of mind. Maybe for a while, but it can be helpful for sure. Because everyday waking up to the news that the AQI level of Delhi has gone down from bad to worse, isn’t a great thing to do. Fortunately, for all those who are able to take that off, and get away from here for at least a few days, there are several serene hill stations within a few hours to a day’s drive from the capital, offering not only cleaner air but also stunning scenery, cosy stays, and rejuvenating silence.
Here are ten hill getaways where the air is fresh, the skies are blue, and your body can finally take a deep, unfiltered breath.

2/11

Lansdowne

Nestled in the Pauri Garhwal district, Lansdowne remains one of the quietest hill towns near Delhi. With thick oak and pine forests, this former British cantonment offers panoramic views of the Himalayas, especially from Tip-n-Top viewpoint. The minimal tourist rush makes it a perfect detox retreat. Stroll around Bhulla Tal, visit St. John’s Church, or just relax in its crisp, pine-scented air.

3/11

Nainital, Uttarakhand

Famous for its kidney-shaped lake, Nainital sits at an altitude of about 2,000 metres and offers a refreshing contrast to Delhi’s polluted plains. The clean, mountain air pairs perfectly with boating on Naini Lake or a cable car ride to Snow View Point. Early mornings here are cool, quiet, and filled with the calls of hill birds — a natural therapy for the city-weary.

4/11

Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh

Perched in the Solan district, Kasauli is a small, tidy cantonment town known for its colonial charm and peaceful environment. The air here is light and fragrant with cedar and pine. Walk up to Monkey Point for sweeping views or explore the old Christ Church. The evenings get misty, the sunsets are orange-gold, and the silence is deeply restorative.

5/11

Ranikhet, Uttarakhand

A calm, army-town hill station set against snow-capped peaks, Ranikhet (meaning “Queen’s Meadow”) is ideal for those who want space and solitude. The altitude of over 1,800 m ensures pure, mountain-fresh air. Visit Chaubatia orchards, enjoy the meadows near Jhula Devi Temple, or simply sit on a bench overlooking the Himalayas. Even at the height of summer, Ranikhet stays cool and clear.

6/11

Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand

Higher and quieter than Nainital, Mukteshwar offers a deeper connection with nature. Apple orchards, deodar forests, and endless views of Nanda Devi make it one of the cleanest, most tranquil escapes from Delhi. The Mukteshwar Dham Temple and Chauli Ki Jali cliffs are must-visits for both spiritual and adventure travellers.

7/11

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

The “Queen of Hills” may not be as offbeat, but it still offers significantly cleaner air than the capital. The pine-laden slopes and colonial architecture give Shimla a timeless appeal. Morning walks along the Ridge or a toy-train ride from Kalka are perfect ways to breathe in the crisp, high-altitude air. The local government’s plastic bans and cleanliness drives have kept it relatively pollution-free.

8/11

Binsar, Uttarakhand

Perched inside the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, this small hill town is known for its 300 km-wide Himalayan views and unpolluted environment. The absence of commercial traffic and limited accommodation help preserve its purity. The forest is home to oak, rhododendron, and a wide range of birds — a literal breath of fresh air for anyone escaping Delhi’s smog.

9/11

Chail, Himachal Pradesh

Close to Shimla but far quieter, Chail is surrounded by deodar forests and boasts the world’s highest cricket ground. It was once the summer capital of the Maharaja of Patiala, and even today it feels like a private retreat. The air is clear, the forests dense, and traffic almost non-existent — a rare combination for a Himalayan getaway.

10/11

Almora, Uttarakhand

Almora combines cultural richness with scenic charm. Known for its ancient temples and curving ridge-top views, it’s a hub for writers and seekers who come to breathe easy and slow down. The air here has a crisp sweetness that you notice instantly upon arrival. Visit Kasar Devi for panoramic views — and perhaps the same inspiration that drew Vivekananda and Allen Ginsberg here.

11/11

Kanatal, Uttarakhand

Tucked between Mussoorie and Chamba, Kanatal is an under-the-radar hill station that rewards visitors with peace, clean air, and beautiful views of the Garhwal Himalayas. It’s perfect for camping, short treks, and sitting by bonfires under starry skies, something Delhi’s smoggy skyline could never offer.
