5 popular tourist spots along the Narmada River that are unexplored heavens of beauty

Flowing across three major Indian states, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, the Narmada River is one of India’s most culturally venerated and geographically fascinating rivers. Stretching over 1,300 kilometres, it meanders through ancient forests, deep gorges, archaeological landscapes, medieval capitals, and living pilgrimage towns. For travellers, the Narmada is not just a river, it is a continuous journey through history, nature, and sacred geography. Here are ten major tourist destinations along its banks, each offering something unique and enriching.

2/6

Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh

Amarkantak is the sacred source of the Narmada River. Set amid the meeting point of the Maikal, Satpura, and Vindhya ranges, the town carries a deep spiritual aura. The Narmada Udgam Temple marks the river’s origin, where devotees gather to see the crystal-clear water emerging from an ancient stone structure. The town is dotted with centuries-old Kalachuri-era temples, serene river ghats, and a landscape rich with sal and bamboo forests.

3/6

Bhedaghat, Jabalpur

Bhedaghat is one of the most visually stunning river destinations in India. The Narmada River slices its way through a narrow gorge flanked by towering white marble cliffs, some rising up to 100 feet. A few kilometres away, the river plunges down a steep rock face forming the spectacular Dhuandhar Falls, named for the smoky spray it creates. The nearby Chausath Yogini Temple, perched on a hilltop, offers panoramic views of the river valley below.

4/6

Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh

One of the holiest sites in India, Omkareshwar is built around an island named Mandhata, which is naturally shaped like the sacred syllable ‘Om’ when viewed from above. This spiritual geography draws millions of devotees each year to the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The town is famous for serene ghats, scenic bridges, ancient caves associated with Adi Shankaracharya, and several ashrams where visitors can immerse in spiritual practices.

5/6

Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh

Maheshwar’s ghats come alive at sunrise and sunset, when light dances on the Narmada and pilgrims perform rituals on the steps. The Kaleshwar Temple, age-old stone carvings, hand-carved chhatris, and riverside aarti make for a memorable visit. Beyond the ghats, Maheshwar is celebrated globally for its Maheshwari handloom sarees, intricately woven with traditional motifs. These are the kind of souvenirs one must not skip.

6/6

Hanuwantiya, Madhya Pradesh

Hanuwantiya may not be a big name on India’s tourist map, but it’s a lesser-known gem that deserves at least one visit. Set beside the expansive backwaters of the Indira Sagar Dam, it has emerged as one of the country’s most exciting river-based getaway spots. During the annual Jal Mahotsav, the entire area turns into a vibrant adventure zone with jet skiing, parasailing, hot-air balloon rides, speed boating, kayaking, zip-lining, and comfortable luxury tent stays. A short boat trip to nearby islands adds even more thrill. Cruise experiences, floating restaurants, sunset boat rides, and bird-watching outings are among the major highlights here.
