5 incredible wildlife adventures in India to plan for in December

India’s wildlife calendar peaks in December, making it one of the most exciting months to head into the wild. Whether you’re a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or someone planning a year-end adventure, December offers extraordinary opportunities to witness India’s most iconic species in their natural habitats. Be it chasing tigers in Tadoba, tracking snow leopards in the Himalayas, or watching rhinos stride across Kaziranga’s wetlands, each of these destinations promises an unforgettable encounter with nature.
Here are five incredible wildlife adventures that promise an unforgettable December escape.

2/6

Tiger tracking in Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra

Winter season is for tiger sightings. There, we said it. Believe it when we say this - Tadoba is one of India’s most reliable tiger-sighting parks, and December is a rewarding time to visit as big cats become more active during the cool mornings. Tadoba is located in Chandrapur district, and is a thrilling mix of bamboo forests, meadows, and lakes that attract a range of wildlife. While the summer months are known for higher visibility, winter safaris in Tadoba offer a chance to see tigers patrolling trails with their cubs. Apart from tigers, visitors can spot dhole (Indian wild dog), sloth bears, sambar, chital, and a soaring population of raptors.

Snow leopard tracking in Kibber, Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

If you’re seeking one of India’s rarest and most elite wildlife experiences, head to Kibber in the Spiti Valley. Although the peaks of winter (January–March) are the prime months for snow-leopard expeditions, December marks the beginning of the season when these elusive cats start descending to slightly lower altitudes following bharal (blue sheep), their primary prey. The cold desert landscape of Spiti transforms into a surreal expanse of white in December, making the stark terrain perfect for tracking pugmarks and observing wildlife movements. But before anything else, make sure that the roads to Spiti are still open. In the deep winter season, Spiti is usually inaccessible.

Elephant encounters in Kabini, Karnataka

Kabini is one of the finest places in India to observe wild Asian elephants in large numbers. Set around the backwaters of the Kabini River and bordered by Nagarahole National Park, the region is famous for its dramatic wildlife sightings, including the elusive black panther. But in December, the highlight is undoubtedly the elephant herds that often gather near the backwaters when temperatures drop. Safaris in Kabini during winter deliver rich sightings. Also, the dense teak and sandalwood forests look especially enchanting during this season.

5/6

Rhino watching in Kaziranga National Park, Assam

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga is synonymous with the iconic one-horned rhinoceros. December is peak season here as temperatures are now cool, the grass has been trimmed by controlled burning, and rhinos can be seen out in the open around the park’s vast floodplains. Kaziranga’s terrain is a mosaic of forest, savannah, and wetlands, supporting extraordinary biodiversity. Apart from rhinos, December also brings superb sightings of wild elephants, Asiatic buffalo, hog deer, swamp deer, and an incredible variety of birds.

6/6

Asiatic lion safari in Gir National Park, Gujarat

December is an exceptional time to visit the last home of the Asiatic lion. Gir National Park, located in southern Gujarat, is the only place on the planet where this subspecies still survives in the wild. Winter brings lions closer to open areas as they enjoy the sun, making sightings more frequent and often dramatic. Beyond lions, Gir’s dry deciduous forest supports leopards, nilgai, chital, and over 300 bird species.
