The Tang jacket is everywhere

The latest fashion obsession of 2026 is the Tang jacket, a modern take on a traditional Chinese garment. Also known as the Tangzhuang, the jacket is characterised by its mandarin collar, frog-button fastenings, and clean, structured silhouette. It has gone from a local release in China to a global fashion trend.
The momentum began last year when Adidas Originals launched its Chinese New Year-inspired jacket during Shanghai Fashion Week. The design quickly gained traction on social media, helping to popularise the Tang jacket worldwide. Since then, several fashion labels, including Ralph Lauren and Yohji Yamamoto, have showcased pieces inspired by the Tang jacket and traditional Chinese tailoring on the 2026 runways, further cementing the trend's mainstream appeal.
"The growing popularity of the Tang jacket may be linked to a broader shift towards fashion that celebrates cultural identity while embracing modern design," says Ravi Gupta, creative designer of a menswear brand.
What’s driving its sudden popularity in mainstream style
Speaking about the trend, Ravi says, “Today's consumers are looking for pieces that are unique, versatile, and thoughtfully designed, and the Tang jacket is an ideal example of all these elements. Its simple yet elegant silhouette and mandarin collar offer a refreshing alternative to conventional jackets.”
According to experts, the appeal lies in a shift from loud patterns to clean, structured design. Ajay Jay, a custom designer and stylist, says, “The traditional frog closures and mandarin collar are such strong visual anchors that you don't need heavy embroidery to make the jacket interesting anymore. The modern evolution strips away the excess decoration and focuses entirely on the silhouette.”
Ravi adds, “The rise of cultural fashion, where influences from different traditions are reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, has also contributed significantly to the Tang jacket’s popularity.”

Making the Tang jacket feel contemporary and versatile
According to experts, designers are giving the Tang jacket a modern update through contemporary cuts, lightweight fabrics, and a softer colour palette.
Speaking about the colour tone and fabric, Ravi adds, “The colours currently in vogue include ivory, sage green, charcoal grey, light blue, and other earthy tones that blend effortlessly into a variety of settings. Common fabric choices include linen-cotton blends, lightweight wool, and silk-linen blends, which offer comfort while maintaining an elegant finish.”

Styling a Tang jacket for everyday wear
- Wear it open or fasten just one or two frog buttons for a more relaxed feel
- Balance the structured jacket with casual pieces such as a fitted white T-shirt, relaxed denim, or wide-leg trousers
- Choose soft, matte fabrics underneath, like cotton, suede, or lightweight knitwear, rather than anything shiny
- Keep footwear simple and understated. Clean Chelsea boots, loafers, or canvas slip-ons work well without making the outfit feel too traditional
