Who is Lord Kaal Bhairav?

Baba Kaal Bhairav is a fierce and powerful form of Lord Shiva who is believed and prayed to as the guardian of time, or Kaal, as we say in Hindi. He is a protective deity who removes fear from the mind, kills ego and negativity, and protects devotees from any harm. And unlike the calm and meditative Lord Shiva, Baba Bhairav is intense, and removes any illusions of life, death, and anything in between.

Plus, he is shown holding a skull, a trident, and a drum, and is accompanied by dogs.

How he became ‘Kashi ke Kotwal’

In Kashi, one of the oldest and holiest cities of India, Baba Kaal Bhairav has a special role. And that is the ‘Kotwal of Kashi’. A Kotwal is basically a guardian police, and Baba Kaal Bhairav protects anyone who comes to Kashi, and keeps a close eye on the devotees. In fact, it is also said that even Yamraj cannot enter Kashi without Bhairav baba’s permission, let alone a mortal human.
And so devotees visiting Varanasi make sure to first visit the Kaal Bhairav temple, and then go for Kashi yatra. (Image: kashi_ke_kotwal/Instagram)
