Tips on dealing with an unpredictable boss

Blessed are those who have an understanding boss. Not everyone is lucky to get a boss who understands you, gives you space to grow and interferes only when needed. Many of us get a boss who is unpredictable. He or she is happy and cheerful in one moment and also tugs at your nerves. So, to deal with such unpredictable bosses, here are some tips that may come in handy.

2/6

Pick your battles carefully

When you have a boss like this, you cannot be fighting with him or her. They may jump on your nerves and test you, throw you off guard, but then this is when you stay calm and calculate whether this battle is worth taking up or responding to or not. If you know it is a “moo point” let it go. Learn the art of picking the right battles.

3/6

Switch off your personal feelings

Someone else's' mood swings that too your boss’ are not in your control and neither are they your responsibility. No matter what the person says, do not take it personally. He or she is probably in that mood because of something else, and it is not connected to you. You just happen to be the scapegoat. So let it be.

4/6

What triggers that mood

Often, even when the coffee machine is not working, someone’s mood can go for a toss. So watch for the signs, the patterns and the triggers- what makes her or him tick like a time bomb. See if you can do something about it. This also helps you in gauging his would-be reactions so that you are mentally prepared for what’s to come.

5/6

Timing

Someone just now messed up, a report went wrong, a presentation brought no fruit. You do not engage with your boss at this moment. It is important to read into the situation and watch your timing before approaching your boss.

6/6

Give some good news

If you think that your boss may calm down with some good news at work, try to break that to him or her when you see someone’s temper brewing. Just like we used to do for our parents as kids, trying to diffuse a volcano? Try that approach if possible.
