Work trends of 2025

The year 2025 has been challenging for many professionals - from artificial intelligence (AI) taking over most jobs to Gen Z reshaping office culture (which is shocking for most millennials). As the year 2025 comes to an end in just a few days, here we list some trends that are defining the future work and shaping office culture for 2026 and beyond:

2/6

Job hugging

As the term suggests, 'job hugging' is a phenomenon that is increasingly becoming common among professionals these days. With the rise of AI and uncertain economy, most professionals these days are choosing stablity over taking bigger risks. This makes them stay at a job (literally hugging a job) rather than taking risks of making career moves when the job markets are unstable.

3/6

Career catfishing

Considering the uncertain times when many employees are holding on to their jobs more tightly than ever, some others are choosing a completely different path of career catfishing. Under career catfishing, many professionals, especially Gen Z, are accepting job offers and then simply not turning up on their first day. This emerging workplace trend shows a shift in attitudes toward employment, commitment, and power dynamics. Young professionals are increasingly comfortable ghosting their employers without any formal communication, viewing it as a response to burnout, mismatched expectations, or better last-minute opportunities in a rapidly changing job market.

4/6

Micro-retirement

With many Gen Z workers entering the job market, it has surely shifted the way people (read millenials and Gen X) used to work earlier. Earlier, retiring when one turned 60 was the usual norm. But now, considering the fickle job markets and high work-stress, Gen Z has made ‘micro-retirement’ an emerging workplace trend. As the name suggests, 'micro-retirement' is when a professional (mostly Gen Z) take intentional career breaks-- which can last from a few months to even a year. During this time, people generally focus on their personal goals, mental health, travelling, or learn a new skill and later comeback to work. This trend shows Gen Z prioritising their mental health and fulfilment, especially after watching older generations sacrifice their well-being and happiness for long-term job security.

5/6

Conscious unbossing

A common workplace trend of 2025, “conscious unbossing” is mainly driven by Gen Z. For the unversed, this happens when an employee intentionally chooses to be an individual contributor instead of aspiring to traditional middle-management roles. These gives them greater autonomy, less work pressure, and better work-life balance than traditional job roles.

6/6

Career Shrekking

Inspired by the popular movie character Shrek, who refused to be perfect or follow others, Career Shrekking is an emerging workplace trend. In this, employees deliberately choose to do simpler and lower-stress roles instead of running behind promotions, leadership positions, or higher pay. But, why? Well, career Shrekking shows a shift in one's priorities; for some professionals their mental health, work-life balance, flexibility, and personal fulfillment matter more than their job titles or status. This is quite common these days among Gen Z and younger millennials, who prefer having manageable workloads over having burnout-driven career growth.
