How to make Karwa Chauth more meaningful- a guide for men

Karwa Chauth, one of the most cherished festivals among married women, is more than just a ritual—it’s an act of deep faith and devotion. On this day, women fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the long life and prosperity of their husbands. The day carries immense emotional significance, symbolizing sacrifice, love, and the invisible strength that often sustains a marriage. In US-Canada Karwa Chauth will be observed on October 9 this time.

But while women observing the fast for their husbands is the norm, it wouldn't hurt if the men could at least respect their devotion and act of love.

Women put in effort, patience, and heart not for themselves, but for the well-being of someone else. The least that men and families can do is to reciprocate this spirit with respect, empathy, and gratitude. Whether you’re observing the fast or not, your behavior can make a world of difference in how meaningful the day feels for the woman keeping it. Here’s how you can do your part with grace and understanding.

2/7

Be mindful about eating around them

If your wife, mother, or sister is fasting, the least you can do is avoid eating large or aromatic meals in front of them. Seeing others eat can make the fast harder. Try to be discreet and sensitive- have your meals privately or keep them simple.

3/7

Help with the preparations

From setting up the puja thali to decorating the area where the ritual will take place, offer to lend a hand. These small gestures show that you value their tradition and want to be part of it, even if you’re not fasting.

4/7

Remind them to rest and stay comfortable

Fasting from sunrise to moonrise without food or water is physically demanding. Encourage them to sit, rest, and conserve energy whenever possible. Offer to handle errands or household chores so they can take it easy.

5/7

Surprise them with a thoughtful gift

Karwa Chauth is an emotional day, and a small present can add to its beauty. It doesn’t have to be extravagant- a handwritten note, flowers, jewelry, or something they’ve been eyeing recently will do.

6/7

Express your gratitude directly

Don’t underestimate the power of words. A sincere “thank you” can mean more than any gift. Let her know how much you value her devotion and love. Saying it aloud, with warmth and honesty, strengthens your bond and turns the day into a shared moment of affection, not just ritual.

7/7

Celebrate together after fast

Once the moon rises and the fast is broken, make it a celebration for both of you. Sit together for the meal, talk, laugh, and enjoy the moment. It will be a way to show your love and consideration towards someone who has gone an extra length for your well-being.
