7 golden rules to follow with neighbours

Here is how you maintain good relations

Residing within a community comes with the significance of cultivating positive and functional ties with our neighbors. The dynamic we establish with those living nearby bears substantial influence on the overall quality of our communal existence. In absence of family or friends, our neighbors are also our first cry of help. Peaceful relationships form the foundation of a harmonious neighborhood, where individuals coexist in understanding and mutual respect. To ensure that these bonds remain strong and enriching, it's essential to abide by certain golden rules that guide our interactions.

2/8

Mutual respect

To have a good relationship with your neighbors it is very essential to maintain healthy boundaries. Every person appreciates a place of their own and outside interference is not very welcome. Thus, avoid peeping into windows or knocking on doors citing ‘hearing noises’ or ‘banging of utensils’.

3/8

Noise

Nobody likes to be woken up by loud music playing in the middle of the night or interrupting their family time. Loud music does not just disturb sleeping patterns, but can also be a cause of concern for the elderly, toddlers and pets. So, make sure the music you play reaches your own ears and not everybody else on the floor.

4/8

Gossiping

When you are new to an apartment/building, you try to socialise with everyone for camaraderie. But, in the process it is not uncommon to be pulled into groups and sects. Make sure the group you are with is not promoting rumors and gossip about others and does not pull you into petty neighbourhood politics. For maintaining peace with neighbors, it is best to not ponder on gossip and scandal.

5/8

Communicate well

It may seem daunting to confront your neighbour about an issue that has been bothering you and even more when you are new to the locality and can be termed as a complainer. But, it is essential to maintain good communication so that issues are resolved at the earliest without the problem growing. Thus, if their way of putting the trash can in the open is causing you problems, let them know about it. Or if the smoke from their kitchen is reaching yours, let them know. Communication can solve half the problems.

6/8

Offer assistance

Completing chores can be a hassle and at times we slack on our own. But, if you see your elderly neighbour struggling with their yard or some menial work, offer to help. Or if your neighbour is a new mother struggling between the baby and house chores, offer to help with babysitting or the likes, whatever seems possible on your end. A little kindness goes a long way.

7/8

Cleanliness

It is essential to keep your property and surrounding well maintained and clean. Bringing the plants home for aesthetics is not where your responsibility ends, it is also important to make sure that the soil isn't infested with bugs and the leaves aren’t flying away post drying.

Similarly, make sure your trash is not spilled all over the floor creating a smelly mess. Afterall, a clean environment is an ideal living space.

8/8

Introduce yourself

This might seem obvious to people, but a good introduction helps others to warm up to you. You can just say hello, give a little gift (nothing too extravagant), gather them for a small homemade meal, or the likes.

An introduction along with a small gift will put forth a good impression and help you settle in easily. Maintain good relationships with your neighbors and treat them as you would like to be treated—with respect, consideration, and empathy.
