Royal families across the world are often admired by people-- be it for their luxurious lifestyles, classy fashion, or grace and elegant way of life. However, even Royals aren't perfect when it comes to making life choices-- one wrong decision and it can often land them in a Royal controversy. Over the years, there have been many scandals in different Royal families that have not only shocked people but also made headline globally. More recently, it is Marius Borg Høiby of the Norwegian Royal family who is charged of 32 crime cases! Here we list some major Royal scandals that shook the world:

Norway Royal family's Marius Borg Høiby charged with 32 crimes, including 4 rape cases

Norway is currently at the center of global attention after Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was formally charged with 32 criminal offenses, including four counts of rape, domestic violence, assault, and other serious crimes.

Prosecutors allege that Høiby raped four women, in some cases while they were asleep, and secretly filmed assaults without consent. He also faces accusations of abusing a woman-- who he was formerly dating-- issuing death threats, vandalism, violating restraining orders, and traffic offenses. His legal troubles first emerged in 2024 after an arrest linked to domestic violence, leading to a broader investigation that uncovered allegations dating back to 2018.

Marius Borg Høiby is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship, before she married Crown Prince Haakon, who is the heir to the Norwegian throne. And so, Høiby holds no royal title. However, being a member of the Norwegian royal family makes this scandal significant. His trial begins in January 2026.

Princess Diana- Prince Charles- Camilla Parker Bowles's love triangle and Diana's explosive Panorama interview

Prince Charles (Now King Charles III of UK) married Diana on July 29, 1981, and theirs is one of the most expensive and popular weddings in the world. Charles and Diana's wedding was seen by a global television audience of 750 million in 74 countries-- which makes it one of the most famous weddings in history. From Diana's wedding dress train to her wedding ring, their wedding is still quite talked about. However, Princess Diana- Prince Charles' marriage was quite turbulent and couldn't survive the test of time. It was Prince Charles' long-standing relationship with Camilla that overshadowed his union with Diana.

Their turbulent marriage, public interviews, and eventual divorce in 1996 captivated the world. Back in 1995, Princess Diana sat down with BBC’s Martin Bashir and spilled royal tea like never before. She opened up about her failing marriage to Prince Charles, famously remarking, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” The world gasped as she revealed her struggles with bulimia, depression, and life under the palace spotlight. The interview not only humiliated Charles but also shook the monarchy to its core. For the first time, the world saw the cracks behind the glamorous facade, cementing Diana’s image as the “People’s Princess” and a global icon.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exiting the UK Royal family and accusations of racism

The biggest royal drama of the 21st century? Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quitting the Crown. In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan shocked the world by announcing that they had stepped back from their duties as senior members of the UK Royal family. The reason: toxic tabloid culture, racism within the institution, and lack of (family) support. This was followed by their bombshell Oprah interview, which only added more fuel to the fire. In the interview, Meghan revealed that she battled suicidal thoughts while Harry accused his family of being trapped in “the system.” Their royal exit was popularly dubbed as 'Megxit', and their move divided public opinion— some praised their courage, while others accused them of betrayal and publicly washing their dirty laundry to gain sympathy and attention. However, one thing’s for sure: With their daring move, Harry and Meghan changed the conversation around royalty, mental health, and modern-day monarchy forever.

Prince Andrew and the Jeffrey Epstein scandal

Few scandals have rocked the British monarchy like Prince Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. The Duke of York was accused of sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she was trafficked to him as a teenager. Although Andrew denied the allegations, the damage was done. His infamous BBC interview, where he said he didn’t sweat, became a global meme. The fallout was huge— Andrew stepped down from royal duties, lost his military titles, and settled the lawsuit out of court. Once known as “the Queen’s favourite son,” he became the face of disgrace in one of the monarchy’s darkest moments in history.

King Juan Carlos of Spain’s shocking exile

In 2020, Spain’s monarchy was jolted when King Juan Carlos I, who was once hailed as a national hero, fled the country amid financial scandals. Allegations of hidden wealth, offshore accounts, and shady deals with Saudi Arabia came to light. People of Spain who once adored King Juan Carlos turned critical of him, questioning whether the monarchy was even relevant today. Meanwhile, King Juan Carlos of Spain’s dramatic exit left his son, King Felipe VI, scrambling to save the royal family’s reputation. For many, it felt like a royal soap opera— complete with corruption, betrayal, and exile. The scandal proved that even in modern times, kings aren’t immune to controversy and downfall.

King Edward VIII’s abdication of the throne-- all for love

Love over crown? That’s exactly what King Edward VIII chose back in 1936 when he gave up the British throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. And King Edward VIII’s abdication changed the course of history foever-- with his younger brother King George VI (Elizabeth II’s father) taking the throne.
Edward’s choice sparked whispers for years, with some believing Wallis held dangerous influence over him. Though their love story is now legendary, it left an indelible mark on royal history, proving sometimes love really does conquer all— even a crown.
