Things parents can do to raise independent children

What parents can do to make their children independent

Every parent should aim towards raising independent, self-sufficient kids. By independent, we do not mean you leave them stranded, with either no guidance or support. But what it really means is bringing up children who are responsible, efficient at decision-making and full of confidence. As a parent, you have a significant role to play. You have the power and the ability to shape their tiny, curious brains. That said, here's how to start right...

2/6

Make them efficient at household chores

It is essential that your child knows at least the basics of household chores. You don't have to burden them with huge responsibilities and heavy lifting. What you can do is encourage them to take up small tasks like cleaning up their immediate surroundings, asking them to put away their toys after they finish playing with them, making them help you put away the groceries and so on. Assign them age-appropriate chores, which eventually will make them more responsible.

3/6

Let them make mistakes

Do not stop your children from making mistakes. Mistakes mean they're trying, they're learning new things and recognizing where they went wrong. Doing so will help them tackle difficult situations in the future. Letting them handle situations only boosts their problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

4/6

Respect boundaries

While you're a parent and you have every right to involve yourself in your child's life, it is important to maintain healthy boundaries. You must give your child the space to practice their individuality, to have an opinion and to be able to reflect. Only then will they be able to be more independent.

5/6

Freedom is essential (within limits)

Avoid restricting your child from doing things they enjoy. Allow them to make their own decisions, offer them choices so that they can build a sense of responsibility. By allowing them to follow their heart, you also give them the impression that they're being heard, respected. While rules and regulations are essential, it should not narrow down opportunities for your child.

6/6

Do not be over-critical

Most parents, in a bid to raise well-mannered, disciplined and successful kids, often become too critical or judgemental towards their children. Some even believe that being harsh to kids is the key to parenting, which is completely false. If you really want your child to flourish and become independent, avoid correcting them when they're attempting to accomplish something on their own.
