Anxiety may have a bad impact on your child's development

Childhood is a time of many challenges, from facing academic tests to dealing with bullying, from struggling with homework to rushing to get to school on time. These challenges may trigger anxiety in children which manifests as avoidance, anger, crying or clinging.

Five ways parents can calm down an anxious child :

2/6

Let them take a lead:

Dr. Vasudha Agarwal, Clinical Director of United We Care, says, “While conversing with your child, resist the urge to offer advice. Instead, trust in your child’s ability to manage age-appropriate challenges independently or with your assistance. Allow them to lead the conversation by acknowledging their feelings “You sound nervous about the test tomorrow” and let the child take the lead in the communication. Avoid using dismissive statements such as "Just relax, everything is going to be okay.”

3/6

Collaborate to create a game plan:

Help them come with a game plan to manage the situation that is causing them anxiety. Brainstorm on ways to be assertive to address teasing by a friend or following the lead of a dance partner to manage anxiety when performing on stage. Be there for them when they wish to fall back but in an encouraging manner.

4/6

Have an empowering dialogue with them:

Encourage them to personify their anxiety as a separate entity such as Worry monster or Anxiety antelope and guide them in talking to their anxiety as though it were a distinct being. Help them to affirm their ability to manage challenging situations by positive and empowering dialogues such as I can manage you Anxiety, I am stronger than you and it’s okay if I make mistakes, that's how I learn and grow.

5/6

Relaxation:

According to Dr. Agarwal, you need to help them to recognise and name the physical sensations associated with their anxiety and guide them through exercises to relax their body and calm their mind. Try to enroll them for activities like meditation and breathing. During an episode of anxiety, remind them to do box breathing.

6/6

Comfort through physical touch:

Offering a hug or holding your child’s hand can have a soothing effect on their anxiety and provide them with a sense of comfort. Wrap your arms around the child and tuck him in until the symptoms of anxiety fade away.
