How to grow carnation flowers in India? Simple gardening tips

Carnations are known for their ruffled flowers, fragrance, and long-lasting nature. They occur in numerous colors such as pink, red, white, yellow, and purple, hence making carnations great choices for use in home gardens, balconies, and bouquets of flowers. Despite being a plant that prefers cooler climates, carnations can be successfully cultivated in different parts of India based on proper gardening practices. The sun exposure, quality of soil, water, and trimming are some of the elements that ensure good development of the carnation plant. Here are six gardening tips for growing carnations in India.

2/8

Located in a cool and sunny area

Carnations are usually found in areas with cool temperatures and ample sunlight. The plant does well in winters and seasons with mild climate rather than in extremely hot weather. A place receiving four to six hours of sunlight per day would be great for flowering. Sunlight received in the mornings makes a perfect environment for the development of the carnation since it provides warm temperature without harming the plant during afternoons. Balconies, terraces, and open garden areas with enough air flow could make good locations for planting carnations.

3/8

Prepare the soil well for strong roots

Loose, fertile, and well-drained soil is needed for a healthy growth of the carnation plant. The roots of the plant become unhealthy when growing in the soil retaining much water that damages them, making the plant vulnerable to fungal disease. Most gardeners usually blend garden soil, compost, cocopeat, and sand to make the proper soil mix that ensures healthy growth. Slightly alkaline to neutral soils are considered suitable for the carnation plant.

4/8

Do not overwater to avoid damaging the plant

Water the carnation plant only when necessary to prevent it from growing in wet soil. Make sure that the soil remains slightly wet instead of being too saturated. Too much watering might harm the plant since it might cause yellowing leaves, root rot, and non-flowering of the plant. The plant requires less watering in cooler months compared to summer period when it requires watering regularly. Before watering again, check how much moisture is in the soil.

5/8

Prune the plant to promote flowering

Young carnation plants require pinching to promote bushy growth and encouraging flowering. Most gardeners pinch the tips of new shoots so that the plant grows more stems instead of becoming tall. The other way of pruning the plant involves the removal of dried and damaged flowers and stems to channel energy into the development of fresh flowers. Such an act facilitates airflow around the plant.

6/8

Feed the plant with flowering nutrients

Nutrients ensure the healthy growth of flowers for the entire period of active blooming of carnation plants. The flowering process in carnations mostly needs fertilizers rich in potassium and phosphorous but not too much nitrogen, as the latter leads to the growth of leaves. Organic substances such as compost tea, organic manure, and diluted liquid fertilizer can be added to the plant after some time for proper nutrition.

7/8

Avoid excessive heat and protect from pests

Excessively high temperatures and high moisture levels due to the monsoon can affect the plant during the growing period in some Indian regions. If temperatures become excessively high, providing partial afternoon shade helps prevent flower wilting. Some carnations are vulnerable to attacks by aphids and spider mites, weakening the flower leaves and buds.
