8 indoor plants that naturally absorb harmful gases

Indoor spaces often contain pollutants released from furniture, paints, cleaning supplies, and synthetic materials. These pollutants, mainly volatile organic compounds (VOCs) ,can affect health over time. Fortunately, several indoor plants naturally absorb harmful gases and help improve air quality. Below are eight effective air-purifying plants:

2/9

Snake plant

The Snake plant is one of the most efficient air-purifying plants identified by researchers. It helps remove toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and toluene. This plant is extremely resilient, grows in low light, and requires very little water. It also releases oxygen at night, which is why it’s recommended for bedrooms. For beginners or those who want a low-maintenance plant, the Snake Plant is a perfect option.

3/9

Peace lily

The Peace lily is known for its ability to absorb harmful gases like ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. Its glossy leaves and elegant white blooms make it both decorative and functional. It thrives in low-light, humid environments and can significantly improve indoor air quality. With minimal care needs, it remains one of the most popular air-purifying indoor plants.

4/9

Spider plant

Spider Plants are excellent at filtering pollutants such as xylene, formaldehyde, and toluene. They grow quickly, tolerate varying light conditions, and require very little maintenance. Their cascading leaves and small plantlets add charm to any interior. Because they purify air so effectively, Spider Plants are widely recommended for kitchens, offices, and living rooms.

5/9

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is well-known for its medicinal use, but it is also a strong purifier of formaldehyde and benzene - chemicals often released by paints and household cleaners. It thrives in bright sunlight and needs minimal watering, making it perfect for sunny spots. In addition to purifying the air, having Aloe Vera at home provides the bonus of natural healing gel for the skin.

6/9

Boston fern

Boston ferns are effective at removing indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde and xylene. Their lush, feathery fronds make them visually appealing while also helping increase indoor humidity. These plants prefer indirect light and high humidity, which makes them suitable for bathrooms or kitchens. Their natural ability to filter air helps create a healthier indoor environment.

7/9

English ivy

English ivy will reduce toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and even airborne mold spores. It works quite well in wet or stuffy environments. English Ivy may be planted in hanging baskets or left to climb on the walls. It is extremely useful and cleans well hence it is an excellent fit in houses that experience some problems with humidity or mould.

8/9

Areca palm

The Areca palm has been known to absorb the bad gases such as toluene, xylene and formaldehyde. In addition to the purification, it also raises the level of indoor humidity, which facilitates breathing and skin hydration. Its luxurious fronds give an exotic impression to interiors. This is a plant that grows under bright and indirect sunlight and makes a beautiful natural air cleaner.

9/9

Rubber plant

The Rubber plant is an indoor shrubby plant, which is not very expensive to maintain and has broad leaves, which serve in the absorption of pollutants like formaldehyde and other VOCs. It also enhances the humidity of indoor space and makes the air overall cleaner. Its pretty glossy foliage also makes it a beautiful ornamental plant yet it remains silent but a very effective type of detoxifying plant.

Houseplants are not only beautiful decorations in your home, but they are also useful in making your home a healthier and safer place to live. The eight aforementioned plants are scientifically known to have the capacity to uptake harmful gases and increase the quality of indoor air. Although they cannot substitute appropriate ventilation, they are a natural and low-cost addition to the provision of fresh, breathable indoor air.
