What happens when you wear sweater and socks while sleeping

It’s hard to take off the cozy sweater and warm socks in winters. Taking them off gives chills down the spine, even when it's time to rest in bed for a good night’s sleep. Although it’s a matter of comfort, the body's relationship with warmth is a little complex. Let’s understand if sleeping with layers on is a smart move or it quietly affects how well we rest.

2/5

The cooling-sleep connection

When bedtime approaches, or say nighttime approaches, the brain signals the body to lower its core temperature. This happens through the body’s ability to thermoregulate. According to the Current Opinion in Physiology Journal, thermoregulation is an essential physiological shift for falling asleep and even maintaining deep, uninterrupted sleep.

The paradox: body needs warmth to cool down

If the thermoregulation part has made you decide the final verdict, then you may need to rethink, because warming certain parts of the body helps the ‘thermoregulation’ process. Some parts that need warmth are hands and feet. This process is called distal vasodilation, where blood vessels in the extremities widen, increasing heat loss from the skin and allowing the core temperature to drop more efficiently. A study in the American Journal of Physiology shows the link between distal vasodilation and sleep onset.

4/5

Why wearing socks can help and when it may not

The science of it clearly explains that when feet are warm, the body falls asleep faster, as the process of distal vasodilation takes place. Supporting this, a study in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology shows that participants who wore socks to bed fell asleep faster, slept longer and experienced fewer sleep awakenings than those who did not wear socks in cold temperatures.

Note- The habit may not be ideal for everyone, as exterior factors like room temperature also influence the body’s temperature.

Scientific verdict for sweaters

A peer-reviewed study published in Nature and Science of Sleep examined how different sleepwear fabrics affect sleep at ambient temperatures of 17°C and 22°C. Researchers found that fabric type significantly influenced sleep onset, sleep efficiency, and thermal comfort.
The takeaway is that wearing sweaters is only helpful when the fabric material is lightweight and breathable.
Note- Wearing sweaters in bed may give the same results to everyone as other factors also influence the body temperature.
