The best fats for your brain, that will boost intelligence and cognitive function

Fats - the name conjures up images of obesity, cholesterol, and high blood pressure, however, as we all know, fats are of two types, both good and bad. When it comes to optimum health, the aim is to strike a balance, and try to increase our good fats and lower our bad fats, so as to keep our cholesterol under control. As we all know, fats are essential for all the organs of our body, including the brain, since they help in boosting intelligence and increase cognitive function. Here are the best fats for your brain, apart from the widely popular walnut..

2/6

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA and EPA, are crucial for brain health. They improve memory and learning, reduce the risk of depression and anxiety, protect against cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. You can find omega-3s in fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel. Plant sources include chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, and hemp seeds.

3/6

Monounsaturated Fats

Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) help lower stress hormones and support the production of serotonin, a key chemical for happiness and good sleep. These fats also boost blood flow to the brain, which helps with focus and mental sharpness. Sources include Avocados, Olive oil, Almonds and other nuts.

4/6

Polyunsaturated Fats

Polyunsaturated fats include both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. While omega-3s are the star, a small amount of omega-6 is also needed for brain cell structure and function. Sources include fatty fish, seeds (flax, chia, hemp), walnuts etc. These fats help keep your brain cells flexible and support learning and memory.

5/6

High-Quality Saturated Fats

Not all saturated fats are harmful. Those from high-quality sources like grass-fed butter, coconut oil, and pasture-raised meats can support brain energy and reduce inflammation. Coconut oil, for example, contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that provide quick fuel for brain cells. But use these fats in moderation.

6/6

Which fats to avoid?

For brain health, one must avoid Trans fats (found in processed and fried foods), Industrial seed oils high in omega-6 (like soybean, corn, and canola oil) These fats increase inflammation and are linked to memory problems and mood disorders.
