Is boba tea good for fatty liver disease? Top US doc explains

About 2 million die each year of liver diseases globally, according to 2023 data. This is about 4% of all deaths worldwide, and the numbers are only rising. Liver diseases are becoming one of the leading causes of death, and lifestyle factors play a crucial role.

Diet has a significant impact on the liver, and poor eating habits are linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a leading gastroenterologist based in California, explains how certain beverages can worsen fatty liver diseases and lead to serious conditions such as cirrhosis. The liver doctor has ranked some popular beverages based on their effects on the liver. Yes, he has also weighed in on the effects of boba tea. Take a look.

Soft drinks

Yes, soft drinks are a real deal breaker. Though they are among the most widely consumed beverages globally, they pose serious risks to the liver. “These are packed with added sugars, which can spike insulin levels and increase insulin resistance over time,” Dr. Sethi said in a video shared on Instagram. Insulin resistance is a key driver in the development of fatty liver disease. Over time, this excessive sugar intake will overwhelm the liver’s ability to process fats efficiently. This will lead to the accumulation of fat in liver cells. If people with fatty liver consume these beverages, it will accelerate the condition and increase the risk of inflammation, scarring, and eventually cirrhosis.

3/5

Energy drinks

There is a boom in sports and energy drinks of late. These drinks are often marketed as performance boosters or hydration aids. They may seem harmless, but in truth, they are. Just like your soft drinks, sports beverages are also loaded with sugars. Youngsters, especially fitness enthusiasts, consume these drinks frequently, thinking it's good for health; however, they are sugar bombs, which do more harm than good. For those with liver diseases, including fatty liver, such beverages could be the driving factor for more serious illnesses. “Opt for coffee, which can actually improve your liver health,” the doctor said.

Boba tea

Yes, boba tea is an exciting drink. The boba pearls bring a novel experience to the drink, thanks to their texture. Also known as bubble tea, this beverage originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. Its popularity is growing, with Gen Zs and youngsters consuming the beverage frequently. But what is the impact of boba tea on the liver? “This beverage is often high in both sugar and calories. In fact, frequent consumption can quietly contribute to fatty liver progression,” the doctor said. If you are struggling with liver diseases, boba tea is a recipe for disaster.
