7 tests every adult should take before 40

How to check if you are healthy

Some truths are better discovered early. Health is not just about eating greens and skipping sugar; it’s also about understanding what the body is silently going through. By the time the 30s roll in, life becomes a whirlwind of responsibilities, late nights, skipped breakfasts, and stress. Amid this hustle, the body starts dropping hints—subtle, often ignored. But there’s wisdom in listening early. Taking a few key medical tests before 40 can unlock a whole new understanding of what the body truly needs, not just what the world says it does.
These aren’t just standard “full body checks.” They are precise, carefully picked tests that help paint a more honest picture of one’s health. Not just for treating disease, but for preventing it altogether.
Here are 7 tests that could truly make a difference.

2/8

hs-CRP blood test

Inflammation shows up as redness or swelling. Chronic internal inflammation doesn’t show obvious symptoms, but it slowly damages blood vessels and organs.

The high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) test helps detect low levels of inflammation in the body. This is not the regular CRP used in infections, but a more sensitive version that uncovers hidden inflammation, often linked with early stages of heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. It's not a test many doctors prescribe by default, but it reveals what regular blood panels miss.

3/8

Lipoprotein(a) test

A normal cholesterol level means the heart is safe. Lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a) can silently raise the risk of heart attacks even when LDL and HDL look normal.

This test is especially important for those with a family history of early heart disease. Lp(a) is a sticky particle that causes blood clots and hardens arteries. What’s surprising is that lifestyle has little impact on its levels—this one’s written in the genes. But knowing early can push lifestyle changes that reduce risks effectively.

4/8

Vitamin D3 and B12 levels

Tiredness is part of adulting. Low vitamin levels, especially D3 and B12, can mimic fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, and even depression.

Modern indoor lifestyles, irregular eating habits, and limited sun exposure quietly chip away at these vital vitamins. While most people wait for symptoms, testing early can help build better immunity, sharper memory, and more balanced moods. What’s often brushed off as ‘just stress’ could be a deficiency silently sapping the spirit.

5/8

Fasting insulin test

A fasting sugar test is enough. Fasting insulin rises long before sugar does and can predict future insulin resistance.

This test gives an early peek into how efficiently the body is managing blood sugar. Unlike glucose tests that often fail to spot early imbalances, fasting insulin helps understand the load on the pancreas. High insulin levels—even with normal sugar—can be a red flag for future weight gain, fatigue, and even PCOS in women.

6/8

Thyroid antibody test

A normal TSH means the thyroid is fine. Thyroid antibodies can be high even before thyroid hormone levels shift.

While TSH and T3/T4 are regularly checked, thyroid antibody tests (TPO and TGAb) help detect autoimmune issues like Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease. These conditions can simmer quietly, affecting energy, mood, weight, and fertility. Testing antibodies early helps intervene before the thyroid completely burns out.

7/8

Calcium score test (CT Coronary Calcium)

ECG or treadmill test is enough to detect heart problems. A heart can look perfect on these tests but still carry dangerous plaque in its arteries.

The Calcium Score Test scans the heart for calcified plaque—a strong predictor of future heart attacks. It’s quick, painless, and doesn’t require contrast dye. Unlike cholesterol numbers that only estimate risk, this test shows the real condition of coronary arteries. A game-changer for those who feel “perfectly fine” but want a clear look inside.

8/8

Liver fibrosis score

Fatty liver only happens to people who drink or are overweight. Lean individuals with unhealthy diets or high stress can also develop silent liver fibrosis.

Regular liver function tests (LFT) often miss early-stage damage. But a FibroScan or FibroTest measures stiffness in liver tissues, helping detect scarring before symptoms arise. With India seeing a rise in non-alcoholic fatty liver due to poor diet and stress, this test can be a quiet lifesaver.
