Protein coffee: All you need to know about it

Making a choice between a cup of warm black coffee and a glass of protein shake after an intense workout session can be tough. Coffee lovers, trying to build muscles mostly had to let go of their cup of caffeine for a protein shake to up their daily protein intake. But not anymore! The latest coffee trend let you enjoy both beverages and reap their distinct benefits at the same time.

Social media website like TikTok and Instagram has always swamped with unique dieting and eating ideas. Last year we got the Dalgona coffees, before that iced latte and the hot new favourite beverage is protein coffee also known as "Proffee".

What is protein coffee?

As the name suggests proffee is replacing the milk from your cup of coffee with protein powder. It is being suggested that it is one of the healthiest ways to add coffee and protein into your morning routine and to reap benefits. This latest fitness trend has gained a lot of limelight among fitness enthusiasts, but the question remains is the combination of coffee with protein really healthy for you.

​How to make proffee?

There is no standard recipe to follow while making proffee. Either you can add espresso to a protein shake or blend few scoops of plant protein powder when preparing your iced coffee. Another great alternative is to add vegan milk, which is a source of plant protein in place of cow milk for preparing the coffee.

If you are taking protein powder, it is easier to mix it with iced coffee than a cup of hot coffee. The amount of protein powder in your drink may vary depending on your taste bud and need for the day. On average one scoop would be enough as it would provide you with around 20 grams of protein.

​How this combination is believed to be helpful?

Protein intake is necessary for the growth, repair and regeneration of cells. Our body requires 0.8 grams of protein per kilo of body weight every day. The requirement increases when you are exercising and trying to build muscles. Taking protein is considered particularly crucial after a workout session to repair the wear and tear on the muscles. Besides, taking protein may also keep you feel fuller for a longer time and prevent unhealthy munching.

Coffee on the other hand can provide greater strength, power, and endurance during a workout. Taking after the workout can help refuel muscles and recover quickly from rigorous exercising.

So, for those who often skip their breakfast, adding protein to the coffee can help them stay fuller till noon. Protein coffee can be beneficial for those trying to shed kilos and looking to cut down their calorie intake.

However, remember that both protein and caffeine should be consumed in moderation. Excess intake can drive you off your goal.

Eggs, oatmeal, quinoa are some of the great sources of high-quality protein that can help to keep you fuller for a longer time and provide other nutrients to the body. Fitness trends like this come and go from time to time. Trying each and every one of them isn't a very great option. Stick to traditional methods to nourish yourself. However, if you want to try it stick to one protein coffee a day.
