Eating highly processed food isn’t advisable

Our health is greatly influenced by the things we eat, and highly processed meals such as pizza, soft drinks, candies, and chips don't contain enough of the essential elements that our bodies need. The total nutritional content of our diet decreases with the amount of ultra-processed foods we consume.

2/6

What is ultra processed food?

Foods that have undergone chemical processing, commonly referred to as ultra-processed foods, typically contain elevated levels of sugar, artificial additives, refined carbs, and trans fats. Consequently, they play a significant role in the global epidemic of obesity and other diseases.

The consumption of highly processed foods has skyrocketed globally in the last several decades. In most parts of the globe today, these foods make up 25–60% of a person's daily energy intake.

3/6

Why does food require processing?

Food is processed when its natural form is altered in order to extend its shelf life, improve its taste, make it safe to store or consume, or even boost its nutritional content.

4/6

Why is its consumption so dangerous?

High consumption of ultra-processed meals has been associated with a higher risk of heart disease, cancer, weight gain, and even death. Scientists think that eating a lot of processed food has an impact on gut health in addition to weight gain. This may be due to the fact that ultra-processed foods frequently lack fiber, which is crucial for maintaining the health of your microbiome.

5/6

How to break free from ultra processed food cycle?

Although the terms "processed" and "ultra-processed" are frequently used and typically connote something unpleasant. But, what really qualifies as processed or ultra-processed? Most of the food we eat every day has been processed, unless it's broccoli that you picked straight out of your garden. Hence, eating home cooked meals or making conscious food choices at a restaurant is the least you can aim for.

6/6

The takeaway

Consuming whole, fresh foods will benefit your health in many ways, including lowering your chances of stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Shop and prepare actual food to create tasty meal ideas.
