Which foods are suitable for a hyperthyroidism thyroid patient; food to eat and avoid

Hyperthyroidism is a health condition where the body’s thyroid gland produces an excessive amount of thyroid hormone, leading to severe symptoms such as muscle weakness, insomnia, irregular heart rate, heat intolerance, diarrhea, enlargement of the thyroid, hand tremor, and weight loss. But you need not to worry since there are foods rich in certain minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients which can help your thyroid gland remain in good shape and overcome the side effects. Hence let’s know about the diet that is appropriate for a thyroid patient.

​Leafy vegetables

Try including leafy vegetables especially from the family Brassicaceae such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, bok choy, kale, cauliflower, turnip etc. which inhibits the uptake and use of iodine properly.

What should you avoid?

To highlight, prior to several hyperthyroidism therapies, a low-iodine diet is frequently suggested. It is very necessary to be vigilant about foods that we consume that indirectly deteriorate our thyroid condition. Hence let’s know about the food that can produce severe allergies, inflammation or other symptoms to a thyroid patient.

Iodine

Try avoiding seafoods or seaweeds as they are rich in iodine content. As a persistent overactive thyroid can cause certain irreversible effects on the body such as encouraging autoimmune condition called Graves’ disease. Many dairy and poultry foods such as cheese, butter, and egg yolk too contain significant amount of iodine in them.

Gluten

Gluten can give rise to serious allergies and inflammation in the patient’s body hence try restricting gluten in your diet. Wheat, malt, and yeast are some of the daily kitchen ingredients which contain a generous amount of gluten in them.

Soy

Well soya isn't an iodine source but still many researches prove that they ain’t suitable for a thyroid patient as it has shown severe reactions and intolerance. Restrict tofu, asian foods which contain soya sauce, or soya milk.

Caffeinated drinks

Caffeine-containing foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate, might aggravate hyperthyroidism symptoms by causing anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, irritability, and a high heart rate. However you can always start your day with other substitutes such as natural herbal teas, flavoured water, or hot apple cider concoction.
