Why is Lauki juice not for everyone? 3 Simple ways to make it

Lauki is an inseparable part of the Indian cuisine so much so that it is extensively consumed across the country. Loved for its unique taste, texture and health quotient, the internet is flooded with the benefits of lauki and its juice. But little do we know that this potent juice is not good for everyone, and may have certain side effects when consumed on an empty stomach. Well, this oh-so-humble vegetable may often trigger severe reactions due to the presence of toxins. Read on to know more!

All about Lauki

Lauki is a common vegetable and a quintessential part of Indian cuisine. Scientifically known as Lagenaria siceraria, it hails from the Cucurbitaceae family, which includes cucumbers, squash, and melons. Loved for its mild flavor and high water content, lauki is naturally loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C and B, as well as minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. Its low calories and high water content make it a hydrating choice in culinary preparations. Despite all the good things about lauki, consuming raw lauki juice on an empty stomach may trigger sudden toxic reactions. Here’s all you need to know about it.

3/6

Toxicity caused by lauki

The myth regarding the toxicity of lauki primarily revolves around the presence of toxic compounds known as Cucurbitacins. These Cucurbitacins are bitter-tasting compounds that are often found in most varieties of gourds. In fact, consuming high levels of cucurbitacins can indeed cause gastrointestinal distress, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, not all varieties of lauki contain high levels of cucurbitacins. Commercially grown varieties are typically bred to minimize bitterness and toxicity. What’s more, following a proper process of cooking and preparation methods, such as peeling and deseeding, can significantly reduce cucurbitacin content.

What study says

Like many foods, consuming excessive amounts of lauki, even non-toxic varieties, can lead to digestive discomfort due to its high water and fiber content. However, this is not indicative of toxicity in the sense of chemical poisoning. According to a study on Bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) toxicity it was established that toxicity from cucurbitacins is rare in commercially prepared or packaged juices but is commonly associated with accidental consumption of wild or improperly prepared gourds.

Benefits of Lauki Juice

Contrary to the myth, lauki juice actually offers several health benefits when consumed as part of a balanced diet:

Hydration: Lauki juice is a natural hydrator due to its high water content, making it refreshing and beneficial for those seeking to increase fluid intake.

Nutrient Boost: It contains vitamins and minerals essential for overall health, contributing to a well-rounded nutritional profile.

Digestive Aid: The fiber content in lauki supports digestive health and may help alleviate constipation.

Here are 3 simple ways to cook lauki:

Lauki Sabzi

Peel and chop the lauki into small cubes. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, and sauté chopped onions and green chilies until golden. Add the lauki cubes along with turmeric, salt, and a pinch of red chili powder. Cover and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, until the lauki becomes soft and lightly browned.

Lauki Kofta Curry

Grate lauki and squeeze out excess water using a cloth. Mix the grated lauki with gram flour, salt, and mild spices, then shape into small round koftas. Shallow fry the koftas until golden and set them aside. Prepare a tomato-onion gravy, add the koftas, and simmer for 10 minutes for a rich and tasty curry.

Lauki Soup

Peel and cut the lauki into cubes. Sauté garlic and onions in olive oil, then add the lauki cubes with salt, pepper, and cumin powder. Pour in vegetable broth and simmer until the lauki is soft. Blend the mixture until smooth, garnish with fresh herbs, and serve hot as a light, healthy soup.
