Decoding Coconut Promotion Scheme and its benefits

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has highlighted high-value crops as a key part of India’s agricultural strategy, in her Union Budget speech. In her speech she proposed the concept of Coconut Promotion Scheme as well. Scroll down to read the details.

What is the Coconut Promotion Scheme and its impact


In her speech, she said, “India is the world’s largest producer of coconuts. About 30 million people, including nearly 10 million farmers, depend on coconuts for their livelihood. To further enhance competitiveness in coconut production, I propose a Coconut Promotion Scheme to increase production and enhance productivity through various interventions 16 including replacing old and non-productive trees with new saplings/plants/varieties in major coconut growing States.” With this push, experts believe that the coconut market could grow further, bringing economic and livelihood opportunities for the 10 million coconut farmers. Experts also believe that the scheme will comply with sustainable farming practices, value addition, and better market integration.

Coconut and its parts


Also, considered as the tree of life, this tropical fruit is very useful. From leaf, bark, to fruit, every part of the coconut plant is useful for mankind. If we talk about the parts, it contain coconut fruit, coconut water, coconut milk and cream, coconut oil, coconut husk, coconut shell, coconut leaves, coconut trunk, and coconut roots.

What does an expert say?


According to Sadhgury, the juice of young tender coconut is nature's solution to help replenish the potassium, other electrolytes and water that the body needs when dehydrated. It is also a natural, low-calorie energy drink that reduces body heat. In his post he has also mentioned that according to Ayurveda, coconut water helps in digestion and clears the urinary path. It is used to treat urinary stones as well as certain intestinal disturbances. When applied externally, it effectively prevents rashes and other skin conditions, especially those due to heat.

What does the study say?


The nutritional value of young coconut as per USDA includes 94.18 g water, 0.12 g protein, 5.23 g total sigar,6.40 magnesium, and 4.66 phosphorus. According to a study titled Coconut water of different maturity stages ameliorates inflammatory processes in models of inflammation, it is found that the use of young coconut water is for potent anti-inflammatory effect and mature coconut water for moderate anti-inflammatory effect. The study states that the composition and quantity of coconut water changes as the fruit matures. It is said that its rich mineral content, especially potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus, supports hydration, muscle function, heart health by regulating blood pressure, and bone strength.

How to use coconut in daily meals

Fresh coconut: One can use fresh coconut to make laddoos, chutneys, or can be used in making popular dishes like idli, dosa, upma, puttu, or uttapam.
Coconut milk: The thick non-dairy milk can be added to curries, dal, or stews to enhance flavour while providing healthy fats and natural creaminess.
Coconut oil: This is one of the healthiest cooking oils and one can use it for tempering, frying, and even sautéing.
Dry coconut: It can be sprinkled over stir-fries, poha, upma, or Maharashtrian-style subzis for added texture and nutrition.
