What is fenugreek?

Known as 'Methi' in Hindi, 'Menthulu' in Telugu, 'Meth' in Punjabi, 'Methi Dane' in Marathi and 'Methi' in Bengali, it is a common condiment and ingredient in spice powders in Indian cuisine. It has a bitter, nutty taste. These tiny seeds are packed with nutrients essential for the body. From adding flavor to dishes, these seeds also have a host of health benefits from controlling diabetes to preventing cancer and alleviating digestive problems and treating acid reflux.

How much should one consume?

The recommended amount of fenugreek is between 2.5 grams to 15 grams, depending on the severity of the disease.

3/9

How does it affect diabetes?

Fenugreek seeds may be helpful in treating people with diabetes. They are high in soluble fibre, which lower the rate of digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. They can also help in improving most metabolic symptoms associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes by lowering blood glucose levels and improving overall glucose tolerance. They also have an amino acid called 4-hydroxyisleucine that is known to have anti-diabetic properties that helps in increasing insulin sensitivity, thereby helping with the breakdown of sugar in the blood.

4/9

The benefits

Lowers cholesterol levels: Fenugreek lowers bad cholesterol or LDL and triglycerides while helping the release of good cholesterol or HDL.

Improves digestion: The seeds of fenugreek are extremely rich in soluble fiber, which slows down the digestion process and increases the absorption of sugar. Consuming it regularly helps in reducung the blood sugar level.

Improves glucose tolerance: It also helps enhance glucose tolerance and reduces the amount of cholesterol in blood.

Studies conducted on fenugreek

According to various researches in India, adding 100 grams of fenugreek seed powder to the daily diet of diabetic patients effectively reduced the fasting blood glucose levels, improved glucose tolerance and also lowered LDL or 'bad' cholesterol.

One study found that a daily dose of 10 grams of fenugreek seeds soaked in hot water may help control type-2 diabetes.

6/9

Fenugreek tea

Add a tsp of fenugreek leaves and seeds in a glass of hot water and let it steep for about 10 minutes. Strain and add lemon and a pinch of honey for flavor and enjoy your cup of hot tea.

7/9

Fenugreekk yogurt

Add a tsp of fenugreek power to a cup of plain yogurt and mix well. Consume it twice a day for better results.

8/9

Fenugreek water

Soak 2 tsp of fenugreek seeds in a bowl and let it soak overnight. Strain the drink and drink it first thing in the morning.
