How to make South Indian Red Garlic Chutney at home

Classic Garlic Chutney Recipe

When it comes to South Indian dishes like idli, dosa, uttapam, appe, and more, we often talk about the whitish coconut chutney and often forget praising the spicy red garlic chutney. This one is to praise the kick it offers to the meal and gives an edge to the palate. Take a look at the simplest recipe that one can easily make at home. Scroll down to read the recipe.

Ingredients required


1 cup garlic cloves, 2 large onions, 4 dry red chilies, , 2 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder, 2 inch tamrind, 2 tsp mustard seeds, 10-12 curry leaves, 2 tsp urad dal, 1/2 tsp asafoetida, 4 tbsp peanut oil, and salt to taste

Step 1


Heat oil in a pan and sauté garlic cloves along with onions and dry red chilies until they turn golden.

Let them cool down and blend them along with Kashmiri red chili powder and tamarind.

Add salt and water, if required, to adjust the consistency to make a smooth paste.

Heat oil in a pan, and add asafoetida, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and urad dal. Let them splutter for a minute.

Add the paste to the tempering pan, mix well, and cook until the oil leaves the sides of the pan.
