Understanding the purpose of each spoon

When it comes to Indian kitchens, we have a basket, glass, or a cylindrical vase that carries all types of spoons in one corner of the kitchen platform. If you observe minutely, all the spoons look different from each other in depth and size. Wondering why? Well, they are not a mismatch, but in reality they all are meant for different purposes. A close look reveals a surprising amount of design thought behind them. From the small spoon you use to stir tea to the large one used for serving dishes at the table, each type of spoon has been engineered for a purpose and with much thought. The size, depth, and shape are not random but carefully adapted to suit the need. Let us explore and after this you might start picking the right spoon for the right purpose.

2/6

Teaspoon

This is the most common one and used in every home. It is small, shallow, and precise and is designed for stirring tea or coffee and measuring small amounts (like sugar or spices). According to experts, its compact bowl prevents over-scooping and fits easily into serving cups and mugs.

3/6

Tablespoon

This variety of spoon is slightly larger than a teaspoon and serves both as an eating utensil and a measuring tool. If we talk about the design, it has a deeper and wider bowl than a teaspoon and allows it to hold more food or liquid. It is apt for eating dishes like dal, rice, and sabzi. Its size makes it apt for serving small portions, bridging the gap between individual use and shared dishes.

4/6

Soup Spoon

As the name suggests, it is used for serving soup. While the first two are more oval in shape, the soup spoon has a rounder and deeper bowl. This design is ideal for holding liquids such as soups, broths, or stews. The design also helps prevent spills and makes it easier to sip directly from the spoon.

Dessert Spoon

This one is also self-explanatory, and if we look at the design, it falls somewhere between a teaspoon and a tablespoon. It is slightly more oval and deeper than a teaspoon and is perfect for soft foods like pudding, custard, or ice cream. The size and shape are also designed from a health perspective, so that one can't indulge too much in a single go.

6/6

Serving Spoon

As the name again suggests, it is meant for serving food. It has a wide, deep bowl that allows it to carry food from a serving dish to an individual plate. It comes with a longer handle that helps keep the hands away from the food, maintaining hygiene and convenience.
