Rice flour is one of the most versatile ingredients in Indian kitchens. And with the ongoing harvest season (September-October), it's the best time to enjoy the simple and easy dishes made with rice flour, which offer a subtle sweetness. Made by finely grinding rice grains, it’s naturally gluten-free, light, and easy to digest. From crispy snacks to soft breakfast delights, rice flour can be transformed into a variety of mouthwatering dishes. Here are eight rice flour dishes one can easily prepare at home.

Rice Flour Dosa


It refers to a quick and crisp alternative to the traditional dosa, as rice flour dosa doesn't require fermentation. All you need to do is, mix flour with water, curd, and a pinch of salt to form a thin batter, pour it onto a hot tawa and drizzle with oil for a golden, lacy dosa, best served with sambar and coconut chutney.

Akki Roti


It is a specialty of Karnataka and is made from rice flour, grated vegetables, green chilies, and fresh herbs. The dough is spread on a banana leaf or parchment paper and roasted on a tawa until crisp and served with curry and chutney.

Rice Flour Pancakes


Also known as chawal ke Cheele, these are savory pancakes made with rice flour, yogurt, and spices. One can also add chopped onions, coriander, and grated carrots for extra flavor. These pancakes are best served with mint chutney or tomato ketchup.

Kozhukattai

These are steamed rice dumplings, popular in South Indian. It is made from rice flour dough stuffed with a sweet coconut-jaggery filling and is popularly known as Modak in Maharashtra. It is steamed to perfection and offered to Lord Ganesha.

It is a popular tea-time snack, which is also called chakli. It is made with rice flour, urad dal flour, and spices. Deep-fried until golden, it’s a festive favorite across South India.

Rice Flour Halwa


It is a melt-in-mouth sweet treat, where rice flour is cooked in ghee, along with sugar, and milk or coconut milk until thick and glossy. Flavored with cardamom and garnished with nuts, it’s an easy yet indulgent dessert.
