7 countries famous for their beers

Beer is one of the most enjoyed drinks in the world, and every country has its own trademark brewing culture and style. From ancient recipes to modern-day craft innovations, beer forms an integral part of social gatherings and cultural celebrations. Many countries have developed signature flavours and techniques, creating a rich tapestry of beer varieties.

2/8

Germany

Germany is known to follow the Reinheitsgebot, or "purity law," which dictates the conditions under which beer is brewed. This purity law is said to involve water, hops, and barley in the brewing process. It has kept German beer standard at its best. The country is known for its Pilsner which has a crisp and refreshing taste. The country also boasts hosting the world's biggest beer festival, Oktoberfest, in Munich, which annually welcomes millions of visitors. Other notable breweries in Germany include Weihenstephan, the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world, and Augustiner-Bräu.

3/8

Belgium

Belgium is the beer lover's paradise, as it boasts a tradition of centuries-old brewing practices and offers Trappist beers, as well as other unique styles like lambics and saisons. The brewing tradition varies with region for this country, and the locals seem to cherish regional flavors. The Chimay brews, developed by the Trappist monks, and the Orval brews are especially famous for their dry-hopped character. Belgian beers thus often have more complex flavorings because yeast varieties and ingredients differ between brews. Many festivals in the country celebrate rich beer heritage.

4/8

Czech Republic

This country has been home to some of the finest lagers in the world, especially the original Pilsner Urquell, which standardized the pale lager styles worldwide. The history of brewing has been there since the 13th century. In this country, people have a very high per capita beer consumption level, showing that beer culture is a broad civilization. The most prominent breweries are Budweiser Budvar and Staropramen, each famous for the quality of their lagers.

5/8

United States

The craft beer movement in the United States has exploded over the past few decades, with thousands of breweries producing a wide range of styles from IPAs to stouts. Portland and San Diego are hotbeds for craft beer drinkers. The American brewing style is known for innovative brewing techniques and flavour, such as the Russian River Brewing Company in California, which brews the iconic Pliny the Elder IPA, and Bell's Brewery in Michigan.

6/8

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has a rich history of brewing real ales, which are traditionally brewed using top-fermenting yeast. An important force for traditional brewing methods was the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). Famous beers in UK include Bitter and Porter, with notable breweries like Fuller's in London and BrewDog in Scotland leading the way in modern craft brewing.

7/8

Austria

Austria is known for its high-quality lagers and wheat beers, with a brewing tradition that dates back to medieval times. The country produces various styles including Doppelbock and Eisbock. Popular breweries include Stiegl in Salzburg and Brauerei Zwettl, both known for their exceptional lagers that reflect traditional Austrian brewing methods.

8/8

Japan

Japan's beer scene has gained international acclaim, especially with Asahi and Sapporo leading the exports around the globe. Japanese breweries blend traditional methods with modern techniques to create unique flavors. Cities like Tokyo and Osaka are also experiencing the success of craft beers, where microbreweries focus on local ingredients. A visitor can explore the world of Japanese beer through brewery tours and tastings at, say, the Sapporo Beer Museum.
